The Tao Te Ching is fundamental to the Taoist school of Chinese philosophy and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism and Neo-Confucianism. This ancient book is also central in Chinese religion, not only for Taoism but Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners have used the Tao Te Ching as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, aided by hundreds of translations into Western languages.

A kínai taoizmus legfontosabb tanítása harmóniát találni a természet erõit mozgató teremtõ õserõvel, elérni a ?nem-cselekvés? (wu-wei) állapotát, és ezáltal megvalósítani a tökéletességet és a halhatatlanságot, vagyis a teljes megvilágosodást. A világegyetem mozgató erõje, a taoizmus szerint, maga a Tao, mint teremtõ õserõ. A Tao mindenekelõtt az öröké mozgó, változó világ végsõ egységének. A taoizmus legnagyobbnak tartott mestere, Laozi (Lao-ce), a hagyomány szerint megvalósította ezt az állapotot, s miután a Dao De jing tanításait lediktálta egy õt kérlelõ határõrnek, elhagyta a civilizált világot, és halhatatlan remeteként élt tovább egy ismeretlen helyen. Laozi (Lao-ce) Az Út és Erény könyve kétségkívül a klasszikus kínai irodalom és filozófia legtöbb fordításban és a legtöbb kiadásban megjelent mûve magyar nyelven. A kínai taoizmus legmeghatározóbb mûvét Ágner Lajos elsõként tolmácsolta magyar nyelven tudományos igénnyel, az eredeti klasszikus kínai szöveg ismeretében. Éppen ezért jelen kiadványt legalább annyira tekintjük a Dao De jing egy újabb, sokadik kiadásának, mint tisztelgésnek Ágner Lajos emlékének.
