Po předchozích událostech kolem zavražděného kněze Viktora Strandgarda, během kterých Rebecka Martinssonová prožila nejhorší chvíle svého života, je mladá advokátka na pokraji zhroucení. Pořád se jí vracení chvíle, kdy byla nucena v sebeobraně zastřelit tři osoby. Její šéf ji tedy raději pošle s kolegou do Kiruny. Ale ani tam ale nenachází klid. O svatojánské noci, kdy celá země slaví letní slunovrat, je v nedaleké vesničce Jukkasjärvi nalezena mrtvá farářka z místní farnosti Mildred Nilssonová. Kdosi ji ubil a její tělo pověsil pod kostelní varhany. Poté, co se Rebecka se zde setká s jejím nástupcem, farářem Stefanem Wikströmem, objeví také tajnou schránku s výhrůžnými dopisy adresovanými zavražděné a pochopí, jaké nenávisti musela Mildred vzdorovat při svých aktivitách na pomoc ženám v tísni.
