Po oslobodení sa Ethel rozhodne vydať za rodinného priateľa Laurenta a odísť s ním do Kanady. Xénia je Ethelinou priateľkou z detstva. Pochádza z ruskej šľachtickej rodiny a po revolúcii v roku 1917 emigruje spolu s matkou. Napokon sa usadia v Paríži, kde žijú vo veľkej biede. Xénia sa vydá za mladého ostýchavého muža zo zámožnej priemyselníckej rodiny. Po tom, čo zažila biedu a odcudzenie, sa teda rozhodne pre "zradu" vo vzťahu k Ethel, uprednostní právo na spoločenské uznanie v oslobodenej, no zruinovanej krajine, zatiaľ čo Ethel, bytostne zasiahnutá touto zradou, hľadajúca vlastnú identitu a túžiaca po osobnej slobode, sa rozhodne pokračovať inou cestou.
