Life of Agony je americká alternatívna metalová skupina z Brooklynu v New Yorku, ktorú v roku 1989 založili spevák Keith Caputo, basgitarista Alan Robert a gitarista Joey Z. Skupina doteraz vydala šesť štúdiových albumov, najmä ich debut River Runs Red z roku 1993, ktorý Rolling Stone označil za jeden z najväčších metalových albumov všetkých čias.
"Ugly" je druhý album vydaný v roku 1995. Album má melodickejší a menej ťažký alternatívny metalový zvuk v porovnaní s ťažším zvukom ovplyvneným newyorským hardcorom, ktorý počuli na ich debute z roku 1993 River Runs Red. Ugly stále obsahuje typický heavy riff kapely (napr. 'I Regret', 'Damned If I Do', 'Fears'); prvky ako „gangové“ sprievodné vokály a kontrabasové bubnovanie však boli nahradené pomalšími, melodickejšími momentmi (napr. „Let's Pretend“) a dokonca aj akustickou gitarou (napr. bonusové skladby „Coffee Break“ a bonusové skladby Bob Marley and the Wailers cover, „Redemption Song“). Hlavný spevák Keith Caputo sa rozhodol pre prirodzenejšie vokálne podanie, vyhýbajúc sa barytónovému kvíleniu, ktoré bolo počuť na predchádzajúcej nahrávke.
