The sixth step into the Darkness is called Longing, and it features a single short story; a very distinctive one indeed. It is a relatively short masterpiece by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the author who is a pillar of our series. The Outsider is one of his most often published short stories, and it has proven to be very popular with both readers and listeners.

The very first step into the Darkness is called Death and Other Horrors, and it contains three short stories.

Mezi Lovecraftovy nejzajímavější práce patří povídky z období, kdy byl trýznivou finanční situací nucen psát pro jiné, ať už jako utajený, anonymní autor, přepisovatel nebo přiznaný spolutvůrce, vesměs rozvíjející náměty a leckdy i sny platících zákazníků. I do všech těchto děl se však otiskovaly jeho svébytné vize a styl a občas se do nich vkradly děsivé bytosti z jeho slavného panteonu. S. T. Joshi, známý znalec a badatel autorova díla, ty nejlepší spolupráce a revize sebral do dvousvazkového vydání, v němž jsou všechny povídky opatřeny zasvěcenými poznámkami a komentáři a uvedeny do souvislosti se zbytkem Lovecraftovy tvorby. Výsledkem je dvousvazkový soubor, jenž jistě potěší všechny příznivce tohoto klíčového představitele moderního hororu. Patrně nejslavnějším textem tohoto prvního svazku je novela „Pod pyramidami“, kterou Lovecraft napsal pro iluzionistu Harryho Houdiniho. Neméně proslulá, byť poněkud neblaze, je morbidní povídka „Milovaní mrtví“. A v povídce „Yigova kletba“ se poprvé objevuje hadí božstvo Yig, které figuruje v dalších Lovecraftových revizích a proniklo i do jeho autorské tvorby a děl jeho četných následovníků.

The second step into the Darkness is called Illusion, and the pioneer of modern-era horror stories, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, meets another of his “gurus” – Edgar Allan Poe (Lovecraft himself is sometimes referred to as E. A. Poe’s direct successor). William Wilson is a typical specimen of Poe’s fantastic, even mystic style that won him world renown.

The third step into the Darkness is called Sounds in the Dark. It begins with a short story written in 1921 by American master horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft called The Music of Erich Zann. The author himself considered the story to be one of his masterpieces, and it is often deservedly included in various horror-story collections.

The fifth step into the Darkness is called Planes of Existence, and it is a solo ride by the feature author of the whole series in three parts. In them, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, practically unread and unknown during his life, but a source of inspiration after his death thanks to friends and devoted fans, deals with the clash of two worlds – the reality and “beyond”.

Čtvrtým svazkem Stín z času se v nakladatelství Plus uzavírá souborné vydání beletristických spisů jednoho ze zakladatelů moderní fantastické prózy H. P. Lovecrafta. Kniha obsahuje rozsáhlý román V horách šílenství a po něm následují významné povídky z posledního období, mimo jiné Stín nad Innsmouthem, Věc na prahu či Stín z času. Na prahu čtyřicítky se Lovecraftův život uklidnil a projasnil, přestože i nadále žil ve značné chudobě. Rodinné úspory se stále tenčily a špatně placené redakční úpravy textů jiných autorů jej uživily jen stěží. Ve své vlastní tvorbě však byl Lovecraft kupodivu daleko soustředěnější a v té hrsti povídek z posledních let promyšleně experimentoval. Zároveň si živě dopisoval s desítkami přátel a autorů, a stal se „zpovědníkem, rádcem a poručníkem“ bezmála celé jedné generace autorů americké fantastické literatury. A jako fascinující osobnost přetrvává ve svém díle dodnes.

Druhá část třetího svazku lovecraftovský spisů Volání Cthulhu přináši vedle všemi již jistě napjatě očekávaného dokončení novely Případ Charlese Dextera Warda další povídky a příběhy z let 1927–1930. V dubnu 1926 se Lovecraft vrací z nemilovaného New Yorku zpět do rodné Providence a s novou tvůrčí energií píše jedny ze svých nejpůsobivější a čtenářsky nejpřitažlivější příběhů: Barva z kosmu je výjimečným propojením horou a science fiction, jejíž objevnost oceňoval i Stanisław Lem, Tamtéž představuje velmi vtipnou mystifikační hříčku, zatímco Hrůza v Dunwichi či Šepot v temnotách obohacují žánr strašidelných povídek o „mytický“ rozměr, který později jeho vydavatelé proslaví pod jménem mýtus Cthulhu. Svazek doplňuje i překlad studie Produktivní hnus od J. M. Fischera.

Třetí svazek souborného beletristického díla H. P. Lovecrafta obsahuje povídky a romány z let 1926-1930, tedy z autorova nejproduktivnějšího tvůrčího období. Vzhledem k jeho obsáhlosti je svazek rozdělen do dvou částí. Nejrozsáhlejší beletristický text, Případ Charlese Dextera Warda, je přibližně v polovině přerušen, aby si i dnešní Lovecraftův obdivovatel mohl vychutnat rozpoložení čtenáře magazínu Weird Tales v roce 1941, který tehdy našel román rovněž rozdělený do dvou čísel a musel si celé dva měsíce počkat na jeho pokračování. Zároveň se čtenář mimo jiné seznámí s povídkou Volání Cthulhu, která stojí na počátku neutuchajícího zájmu o lovecraftovskou mytologii, jež ovlivňuje novou generaci autorů, pokračující v rozvíjení Lovecraftových bizarních motivů.
