Ahab is the captain of a whaling ship named the Pequod. His great obsession with the giant whale, Moby Dick, makes him embark on a dangerous voyage. Some years before, the captain lost his leg because of the whale and now Ahab’s main desire is to take his revenge on the whale by killing it. He is so obsessed, that Ahab is ready to sacrifice everything he has, including the Pequod and all the members of his crew, and even his own life.

The narrator of this story is a successful lawyer on Wall Street. He hires a scrivener named Bartleby to help him with all the papers and relieve the load of work. Bartleby quickly gains the lawyer’s trust by completing his tasks on time. However, the newcomer becomes mentally unstable. He suddenly refuses to perform his duties and stares at a blank wall instead.

Moby Dick is a novel by American author Herman Melville. It is the story of captain Ahab’s quest for revenge against the titular white whale Moby Dick. The whale has on a previous voyage destroyed Ahab's ship and severed his leg at the knee. The story is narrated by the sailor Ishmael. Originally the novel was a failure but in the 20th century it was rediscover and recognized as work of literary genius.

Říkejte mi Izmael… V internetových kvízech, kde se má poznat dílo podle první věty, většinou bezpečně najdeme Bílou velrybu. Dvaatřicetiletý Melville ji poprvé vydal roku 1851 a dodnes patří k tomu nejrespektovanějšímu, co ve světové literatuře (a americké zvláště) existuje. Román popisuje plavbu velrybářské lodi Pequod, již velí kapitán Achab. Stíhání obrovského bílého vorvaně, přezdívaného Moby Dick, je metaforou lidského boje s přírodou a také zbytečným pachtěním za nereálnými cíli.

Francouzský kreslíř Christophe Chabouté přímo zázračně proměnil do komiksové podoby jedno ze základních děl anglické literatury. Osudový souboj kapitána Achaba s bílou velrybou znají i ti, kteří nikdy román Hermana Melvilla nečetli, a to nejen proto, že se dočkal celé řady úspěšných i neúspěšných zpracování (jednu z komiksových verzí vytvořil i legendární Will Eisner). Moby Dick je totiž příběh, který dnes neoddiskutovatelně patří do kulturního kánonu. Také proto Chabouté neměl lehkou startovací pozici, ale jeho pojetí bez debaty bere dech. Černobílá kresba, v níž vynikne každé ráhno, uhrane čtenáře svojí atmosférou. Znovu se ocitneme na velrybářské lodi a díky Chaboutého umění ucítíte vodní tříšť a uslyšíte vítr v lanoví. Lov na Moby Dicka může začít.

Píše se rok 1814. V přístavním městečku New Bedford se chystá mladý Izmael na moře. Dá se najmout na velrybářskou loď, jejíž kapitán Achab kdysi přišel o nohu v boji s bílou velrybou zvanou Moby Dick. Brzy se ukáže, že cílem nové výpravy není lov, ale pomsta za každou cenu. „Kdykoli zpozoruji, že se začínám tvářit zatrpkle, kdykoli má duše prožívá svůj teskně mživý listopad; kdykoli si všimnu, že se nevědomky zastavuji před obchody s rakvemi a kráčím v poslední řadě každého pohřebního průvodu, který potkám; ale zejména kdykoli těžkomyslnost nabude nade mnou takové moci, že musím volat na pomoc všecky své mravní zásady, abych záměrně nešel na ulici a soustavně lidem nesrážel klobouky z hlavy – tehdy vím, že je svrchovaný čas, abych se co nejrychleji dostal na moře.“ Tak hovoří Izmael, hrdina Melvillova románu. Miluje život na moři. Moře je pro něj druhým domovem, a tak není divu, že se často nechává najímat na lodě jako námořník. Ani tentokrát to nebylo jinak. Když se nechal najmout na velrybářskou loď, domníval se, že půjde o obyčejnou výpravu za rybami. To by ovšem nesměl narazit na kapitána Achaba, který zamýšlí něco jiného – pomstu na obrovské bílé velrybě – Moby Dickovi, která ho kdysi připravila o nohu. Rozpoutává se souboj na život a na smrt. Román Bílá velryba vznikl již v roce 1851 a jeho autor Herman Melville v něm zúročil své osobní zkušenosti z námořnické praxe. Zároveň se inspiroval několika skutečnými událostmi a hrdiny. Už titulní Moby Dick má svůj předobraz: tím byl vorvaní samec přezdívaný Mocha Dick, obývající v 19. století Pacifický a Atlantický oceán. Konec Achabovy lodi je pak inspirován katastrofou škuneru Essex, který ztroskotal na moři v roce 1820 a z jehož posádky se zachránili jen dva námořníci, jimž se podařilo na moři přežít tři měsíce, než je v lednu 1821 zachránila loď Dauphin. Melvillův rozsáhlý román jako by vznikl o sto let později; jeho fascinující vyprávění působí jako román Hemingwayova současníka. Podobně současně zní i ve vynikající interpretaci herce Miroslava Středy.
