It is the end of the summer. The tourists have already gone, and now the sun is abandoning the Lake District's damp valleys. Only a lone camper remains, enjoying the quiet. It allegorically suggests a number of historical encounters on British soil: the coming of the Vikings, the coming of the Romans. But The Field of the Cloth of Gold sits firmly outside of time, a skillful and surreal fable dealing with ideas of ownership, empire, immigration, charisma, diplomacy, and bureaucracy. It cements Magnus Mills's status as one of the most original and beloved novelists writing today.

Krédem Tama a Richieho jsou děvky, pivko a ročes , a z toho především ta hospoda, kam musí oba po práci zajít, i kdyby venku trakaře padaly. Firma dostane zakázku z Anglie, kam si však Donald netroufá poslat Tama a Richieho samotné a přidělí jim nového předáka (románového vypravěče). Cesta, pobyt a práce se neobejdou bez všemožných problémů, z nichž ale žádný není nikdy tak velký, aby trojici zabránil ve večerní návštěvě hospody. Pivo je jejich jedinou pohonnou hmotou. Klíčové je pak jejich setkání s řeznickou firmou bří Hallové, která potřebuje spousty ohrad pro zvířata .
