The Romanian writer Mircea Eliade is best known in the English-speaking world as an influential Historian of Religion, author of such works as The Sacred and the Profane and The Myth of the Eternal Return. However, Eliade’s body of work is much broader, and throughout his life he kept the world of fiction and mysticism very close to his heart. Starting at the age of fourteen, Eliade continuously produced works of fiction alongside his academic work.This volume consists of six of his best short stories, taken from over a 30-year period, starting in 1959 with A Fourteen-Year-Old Photograph – the tale of a distance healing in which the patient claims miracle while the healer admits artifice - and including perhaps his most famous short story, the time-shifting At the Gypsies, and culminating with In the Shadow of a Lily, the last story Eliade is known to have written. Each of these stories is dense with allusions and interwoven with connections and references drawn from the imagination and vast knowledge of a great man. Who knows what secrets they may conceal? One thing is for sure - they will repay repeated close reading, but will also charm on the first encounter.

Iniciace je soubor rituálů, kultů, obřadů a zkoušek, po nichž následuje zásadní změna náboženského a sociálního statusu osoby, která iniciaci podstupuje. Vstupuje do chaosu a poodstupuje rituální smrt, stává se jakousi tabulou rasou a začíná znovu, aby se z přírodního tvora mohla stát součástí duchovního života svého společenství – bytostí spojenou s bohy, předky a tím, jak se věci na „počátku“ staly. Eliade ve svém pečlivě podloženém díle porovnává archaické iniciace v rámci různých kultur na všech kontinentech (Amerika, Austrálie, šamanismus, Indie…), zabývá se iniciací mužů i žen, rolí tajných společností, válečnickými rity i iniciací v rámci velkých náboženství, zejména křesťanství. Ve všech iniciacích potvrzuje podobnou posvátnou zkušenost – zážitek nerozlučného pouta mezi lidmi a světem bohů, duchů, zvířat, předků a přírody.Mircea Eliade (1907–1986) byl jeden z nejslavnějších světových religionistů a spisovatel rumunského původu. Narodil se v Bukurešti a v letech 1929–1931 žil v Indii a připravoval se na doktorát na téma jóga. Poté vyučoval filozofii na Univerzitě v Bukurešti a působil v diplomatických službách. V roce 1945 definitivně odchází do Francie a vyučuje na Sorbonně a od roku 1956 žije ve Spojených státech, kde vede katedru dějin náboženství na Chicagské univerzitě. Eliade je ceněn pro svůj důraz na posvátno jako jednu z modalit bytí a pro spisy o šamanismu, józe, kosmologických mýtech apod.

S ez a képtelenség, legalábbis annak szemében, aki önmagával szemben őszinte, maga a történelem rémülete." Az archaikus ember - akit a modern szemlélet sokszor a "primitív" jelzővel illet - életét átszövi az az alapelv, hogy minden cselekedet egy égi mintának, archetípusnak megfelelő, korábban már megvalósult, istenek, hősök vagy az ősök által végrehajtott tett rituális megismétlése. Amelyik cselekedet nem ilyen, az ontológiai szempontból nem is létezik - így a profán tettek sem léteznek, ahogy a kronologikus történelem sem, csakis a szakrális, mely a mítoszokban őrződik meg. Ezzel szemben a modern, magát szabadnak tartó, de a történelem rémületébe zuhant ember hiába fegyverezik föl historizmussal, egzisztencializmussal, netán marxizmussal, vigasztalanul áll a sorscsapásokkal és szenvedésekkel szemben - mindaddig, amíg egy "szabadságfilozófia", az Isten létébe vetett hit mint a legmagasabb fokú teremtő szabadság meg nem menti, és ki nem emeli a történelmi lét fogságából. Mircea Eliade (1907-1986), a világhírű vallástörténész jelen könyvhöz írt előszavában a következőkkel ajánlja művét az olvasóknak: "ezt a könyvemet tekintem a legjelentősebbnek; s ha azt kérdezné valaki, milyen sorrendben érdemes könyveimet olvasni, azt tanácsolnám, ezzel kezdje".
