Von nichts anderem erzählt Afterdark, den man am ehesten mit einem Quentin-Tarantino-Film vergleichen kann: Pulp Fiction, wieder zu Literatur gemacht. Afterdark, der Roman des japanischen Kultautors Haruki Murakami (Gefährliche Geliebte, Sputnik Sweetheart, Kafka am Strand, Tony Takitani), beginnt etwas schwach, gewöhnlich und vielleicht sogar ein wenig billig. „Aus der Höhe wirkte die Stadt wie ein riesiges Lebewesen. Oder wie eine künstliche Ansammlung unendlich vieler ineinander verschlungener Existenzen“, steht da zu lesen. Das erste Bild ist inzwischen ein Topos geworden, der sich bis in die Trivialliteratur erstreckt -- und der von Murakami mit Vergleichen wie Adern (für Straßen) oder Pulsschlag (für das urbane Leben) noch weiter ausgereizt wird. Der zweite Satz wäre schlichtweg banal -- eröffnete er nicht bereits zu Beginn den Blick auf die poetische Struktur von Afterdark: Unendlich viele Existenzen, deren Biografien und Schicksale ihr Wohnort ebenso wie die Hand des Erzählers zusammen hält. Diese Perspektive beherrscht Murakami auf unnachahmliche Art und Weise. Sie macht Afterdark zu einem kleinen Meisterwerk. --Stefan Kellerer

Le narrateur, un informaticien de trs haut niveau, qui effectue des missions spéciales, apporte un jour sa collaboration un vieux savant dont le laboratoire se situe dans les sous-sols obscurs d'un immeuble. Ds lors, il est entraîné dans une aventure terrifiante. Paralllement ce Hard-boiled wonderland, interviennent en alternance les chapitres de La Fin des temps : le narrateur se trouve prisonnier d'une ville onirique, peuplée de licornes au pelage doré. Les deux intrigues se rejoindront finalement. De mme que son personnage flirte avec d'anodines jeunes filles, Haruki Murakami courtise ici le mythe - ce qui nous vaut une fable d'une prenante étrangeté. Ce roman a obtenu au Japon le prix Tanizaki.

Hlavní hrdina románu žije poklidně v Tokiu a spoluvlastní malou reklamní agenturu. Život mu pomalu míjí pod rukama a on toho od něj už ani moc nečeká. Stačí však, aby jejich firma otiskla v reklamním letáku nevinnou fotografii krajinky s ovcemi a hrdina se ocitá na nechtěné iniciační pouti kamsi do „srdce temnoty“ současného Japonska… Nečekaně ho vyhledá jistá organizace a on pod pohrůžkou násilí putuje nedobrovolně na ostrov Hokkaidó, aby tam za každou cenu našel tajemnou ovci s hvězdou na hřbetě…
