On Monday 20 March 1995 the Japanese Aum cult released a deadly cloud of Sarin nerve gas into the Tokyo underground. 12 people were killed and an estimated 3,800 suffered serious after-effects. Dann senkt sich der Blick des beschreibenden Wie-Erzählers wie in einer langen Kamerafahrt auf den hellsten Punkt, das Zentrum seines Interesses, die Welt der Vergnügungsviertel, Love Hotels, Schnellrestaurants und Workoholics. Hier werden Prostituierte misshandelt, tanzen Schwangere zur Freude von Voyeuren in den Nachtbars und finden Begegnungen zwischen Großstadt-Zombies statt, die keiner so erwarten konnte. Von nichts anderem erzählt Afterdark, den man am ehesten mit einem Quentin-Tarantino-Film vergleichen kann: Pulp Fiction, wieder zu Literatur gemacht. Afterdark, der Roman des japanischen Kultautors Haruki Murakami (Gefährliche Geliebte, Sputnik Sweetheart, Kafka am Strand, Tony Takitani), beginnt etwas schwach, gewöhnlich und vielleicht sogar ein wenig billig. „Aus der Höhe wirkte die Stadt wie ein riesiges Lebewesen. Oder wie eine künstliche Ansammlung unendlich vieler ineinander verschlungener Existenzen“, steht da zu lesen. Das erste Bild ist inzwischen ein Topos geworden, der sich bis in die Trivialliteratur erstreckt -- und der von Murakami mit Vergleichen wie Adern (für Straßen) oder Pulsschlag (für das urbane Leben) noch weiter ausgereizt wird. Der zweite Satz wäre schlichtweg banal -- eröffnete er nicht bereits zu Beginn den Blick auf die poetische Struktur von Afterdark: Unendlich viele Existenzen, deren Biografien und Schicksale ihr Wohnort ebenso wie die Hand des Erzählers zusammen hält. Patnáctiletý Kafka Tamura žije s otcem v centru Tokia, rozhodne se najít matku a sestru, které před mnoha lety zmizely, a uteče z domova. Skrývá se v knihovně v malém městečku, kde pozná stejně `podivné` kolegy. Párkrát se mu zdá, že matku zahlédl, ale je to mýlka. Setká se i s chlapíkem připomínajícím Forresta Gumpa: neví, jak si koupit lístek na vlak, nezná jméno premiéra, zato rozmlouvá s kočkami… Murakamiho román je další, moderní verzí příběhu o Oidipovi. Hrdina se pokouší uniknout otcovskému (oidipovskému) proroctví: Jednou zabiješ svého otce a jednoho dne budeš spát s matkou. Autor se soustředí na osud dvou individualistů, kteří se nedokážou zařadit do společnosti. Jak bývá u autora obvyklé, dílo obsahuje narážky na kulturní ikony euroamerické kultury, nechybí prostředí bordelů, barů ani fantaskní prvky. Po veleúspěšném Norském dřevu Murakami osvědčil, co skvěle umí: `mix` příběhů a nevtíravé propletení japonské a západní mentality.

Komorní milostný příběh, v němž hraje roli tajemství a osudovost, příběh ztrácení a nalézání, návratů k téže ženě, dilema muže, který má vše, o čem dřív mohl jen snít, a přesto tápe v domnění, že skutečnost je jiná, než jak se jemu či nám jeví… Milostný trojúhelník, v jehož středu sledujeme nejprve chlapce jménem Hadžime, trpícího tím, že je jedináček, později dospělého muže, který si vzal dívku ze zámožné rodiny a má s ní dvě děti, Hadžimeho, jenž znovu potkává svou lásku z dětství, tajemnou Šimamoto. Potkává i ztrácí, nalézá, aby ztratil. V neskutečné, mystické noci, která děj graduje až k šílenství, možná vytušíme odpověď na otázku, co se událo: s námi či s postavou knihy? Dílo nejvýznamnějšího japonského spisovatele současnosti, v němž autor až obsesivně "operuje" se svými nejvnitřnějšími, palčivými tématy.

Byl jsem jedináček, konstatuje hrdina lapidárně hned v první kapitole románu: tohle zjištění pro něj není příjemné, naopak mu přináší pocity nenormality, méněcennosti, a společnost, v níž se jako dítě pohybuje, mu oplácí stejně: vyloučí ho. Hadžime tuší, že do standardizovaného světa nepatří, a zařídí se po svém - otevře si jazzový bar, pak druhý, je úspěšný a bohatý, má rodinu a dvě děti, může být takzvaně šťastný. Úspěch a peníze ho však neuspokojují a v době pragmatického blahobytu 80. let v Japonsku se nemá ani s čím identifikovat, ani proti čemu protestovat. Nicméně se odmítá podílet na finančních machinacích svého tchána, které považuje za podvodné. Jednoho dne se v jeho poněkud stereotypním životě zjeví spolužačka a kamarádka z dětství, tajemná Šimamoto, odmítající mluvit o své minulosti. I ona byla jedináček a krom toho ji z kolektivu vyřazoval tělesný handicap. Před námi se otvírá komorní milostný příběh, v němž hraje roli tajemství a osudovost, příběh ztrácení a nalézání.
