Ilan Pappé je jednou z nejvýraznějších a v očích mnoha i nejkontroverznějších tváří „disi¬dentské“ skupiny izraelských historiků, kteří od osmdesátých let dvacátého století na základě nově zpřístupněných, odtajněných archivních dokumentů kriticky přehodnocují zavedený oficiální výklad izraelských dějin, především pak obdo¬bí spjaté se založením Státu Izrael v roce 1948 a s izraelsko-palestinským konfliktem, který ani po dlouhých desetiletích nedospěl k mírovému řešení. V rámci volného uskupení „nových histori¬ků“ patří Pappé k těm nejradikálnějším. Za své po¬stoje čelil ve své rodné zemi ostrým útokům, ba výhrůžkám smrtí, a když byl v roce 2007 v podstatě vyštván z Haifské univerzity, rozhodl se pro odchod do Velké Británie, kde dodnes působí na Exeterské univerzitě. Ve své knize Deset mýtů o Izraeli, která vyšla v roce stého výročí Balfourovy deklarace a padesátého výročí okupace zbylých palestinských úze¬mí, Pappé vyvrací základní mýty, o něž se opírá „státní doktrína“ a oficiální narativ Státu Izrael. Zpochybňuje například tradiční představu, že Palestina byla před příchodem prvních sionistů takřka liduprázdnou, zaostalou pouštní krajinou, demas¬kuje mýtus o dobrovolném odchodu palestinských uprchlíků v roce 1948, ukazuje neudržitelnost teze, že neexistuje žádná souvislost mezi sionismem a kolonialismem, dokazuje nepravdivost názoru, že Izrael v roce 1967 při šestidenní válce jednal tak, jak jednal, proto, že „neměl na vybranou“, demonstruje neobhajitelnost přesvědčení, že Izrael se v rámci mírového procesu z Osla skutečně pokoušel o urovnání konfliktu a uzavření míru, a v neposlední řadě koriguje široce sdílené mínění, že Izrael je demokratickým státem… Zároveň je nutno dodat, že nesmlouvavý bořitel mýtů Ilan Pappé bývá obviňován z toho, že sám manipuluje s fakty a vytváří mýty nové. Ovšem i ti, kdo s ním nesouhlasí, by si jeho argumenty podložený výklad měli vyposlechnout. České republice je převažující veřejné mínění zcela nekriticky na straně Izraele. Je proto dobře, že pro čtenáře ochotné vnímat i argumenty protistrany se na český trh dostává Pappého kniha "Deset mýtů o Izraeli". Břetislav Tureček
