Sylvia Plathová (1932 – 1963), americká prozaička a básnířka, je známa českým čtenářům díky románu Pod skleněným zvonem (Argo, 1998) a sbírce Noční tance (Argo, 2002). Nyní Argo přichází se souborem tří kratších dětských příběhů, které potěší nejen děti, ale uchvátí i dospělé. Obdivovatele Plathové jistě překvapí nečekaná hravost a rozmarná potrhlost textů. Prozaický příběh Kuchyň paní Třešinkové napsala Plathová v roce 1958 pro dětský časopis, publikován byl ale poprvé až v roce 2001, tedy 38 let po autorčině dobrovolné smrti. Vypráví se v něm o kuchyňských přístrojích, jež jsou přesvědčeny, že dokážou lépe plnit úkoly svěřené jejich kolegům v kuchyni, a způsobí tím naprostý chaos. Ve veršované Knížce o postelích, poprvé vydané v roce 1976, sestavila Plathová úžasnou kolekci všemožných postelí s překvapivými, báječnými schopnostmi – dovedou kupříkladu cestovat pod vodou, plachtit vzduchem, spát pod sněhem, poskakovat či malovat. Třetí příběh o Tomášovi a jeho vytouženém hořčicově žlutém obleku pro všechny příležitosti má název Oblek, kterému nic nevadilo.

Druhá básnická sbírka Sylvie Plathové nazvaná Ariel, vydaná v roce 1965, tedy dva roky po autorčině smrti, patří k nejslavnějším angloamerickým básnickým knihám dvacátého století. K jejímu kultovnímu statusu samozřejmě nemalou měrou přispěl příběh obestírající její vydání: mladá, nadějná, půvabná básnířka, zmítaná od dětství úzkostmi a depresí, si po rozpadu svého manželství vzala život; texty z její pozůstalosti pak vydal její manžel a otec jejích dvou dětí, básník Ted Hughes – a ukázalo se, že Ariel je autorčino opus magnum… Výsadní postavení Sylvie Plathové v rámci moderní angloamerické literatury ovšem není způsobeno jen oním tragickým příběhem, nýbrž především nespornou silou její poezie: Plathová je básnířka nesmírně sensitivní, básnířka přetavující veškeré podněty zvenčí v zcela svébytný, bolestný výraz, který je přitom v básních reflektován, pozorován jaksi z odstupu, s drsnou a všeprostupující ironií.brbr K věhlasu autorčiny poezie v českém kontextu pak bezesporu přispěly překlady Jana Zábrany, pro něhož Plathová představovala velké, uhrančivé téma. Překladu sbírky Ariel se věnoval bezmála dvacet let – a nad hotovým dílem si poznamenal: „Žádná ženská mě v životě neutahala tak jako Sylvia Plathová (…) Do těch básní se nelze dostat paklíčem, spíš to chce rozrazit skořápku jako ořech – a pak začít pracovat se střepy (…) Budu rád, jestli tenhle překlad přežiju. Poněvadž je to spíš zápas, spíš rvačka, při které jeden škrtí druhého – spíš tohle než překlad.“
