Jako mladík se připojil k hnutí katalánských nacionalistů a stavěl se kriticky vůči církvi, ke konci života věnoval všechny své síly stavbě jediného kostela a image dandyho vystřídalo spartánské stáří. Život zasvětil svému umění, byl nazýván „Dantem architektury".
