Merce Rodoreda (1908–1983) a modern katalán irodalom legtöbbet fordított klasszikusa. Bár a Spanyol Polgárháború végétől negyvenhárom éven keresztül száműzetésben élt, és a kötetünkben szereplő két regény Genfben íródott, mindkettőben Barcelona ikonikus helyszínein zajlik a cselekmény: A Diamant tér főhősének tágabb értelemben vett otthona a város talán legkatalánabb negyede, Gracia, A Kaméliás utca Cecíliája pedig a híres sétálóutcára, a Ramblára jár ismerkedni, és nagy álma eljutni a Ramblán található operaházba, a Liceuba. Két nagyon különböző, sodródásában mégis hasonló női sorsot ismerhet meg az olvasó a két regényen keresztül: míg Natalia a házasságot választja, Cecília, a talált gyerek, első, önzetlen szerelmei után férfiak kitartottjaként próbálja megőrizni szabadságát. Választásaik, a kiszolgáltatottság elleni küzdelmük szempontjából örök érvényű történetekről van szó. Amit Kulin Katalin írt A Diamant tér első magyar kiadásának évében a regény főszereplő-elbeszélőjéről, igaz A Kaméliás utca Cecíliájára is: „Öntudatra ébredésének folyamatában egy, a történelem peremére szorult réteg küzdelmét, egy egész népnek a kultúrája visszahódításáért folytatott harcát is kell látnunk. Végső soron mindazok sorsát, akik elhagyatottak, akiknek Lázárként kell megelégedniük a hatalmasok lakomája után maradó morzsákkal.” (Filológiai Közlöny, 1978)
