Hlavnou postavou knihy je bagdadský obchodník so starožitnosťami Hadí. Z častí tiel obetí bombových útokov vytvorí telo, ktorá nečakane ožíva a začína sa mstiť za každú obeť, z ktorej je vytvorené. Hadí so zdesením zisťuje, že sa mu monštrum vymklo spod kontroly. Miestami až surrealisticky pôsobiaca satira popisuje deštruktívne stupňovanie násilia v Bagdade. Mesto po americkej invázii a páde krutého režimu Saddáma Husajna sužujú bombové útoky a občianska vojna. "Keďže som poskladaný z ľudí rozličného pôvodu - rôznych národností, kmeňov, rás a spoločenských tried - som miešanec, aký doteraz ešte neexistoval. Myslím si, že som prvý skutočný iracký občan," hovorí o sebe Hadího výtvor. Román získal Medzinárodnú cenu pre arabskú prózu, zároveň sa dostal do užšej nominácie na International Booker Prize a Arthur C. Clarke Award.
