It was the only entirely female orchestra in any of the Nazi prison camps and, for almost all of the musicians chosen to take part, being in the orchestra was to save their lives. Přestože v jádru knihy dřímá politika, jedná se o fascinující, bohatě ilustrovaný popis, jak dívky a ženy Paříže v letech 1939–1949 přežily druhou světovou válku a její následky, stále v grandiózním stylu. „Když si v roce 1924 Suzanne vzala inženýra Jeana Belperrona, usadil se mladý pár na Montmartre, kde si našel mnoho přátel mezi avantgardními umělci. Její přítelkyni, krásnou herečku a příležitostnou modelku klenotů Nusch Eluardovou, ženu a múzu surrealistického básníka Paula Eluarda, fotografoval Man Ray se šperky od Belperronové.“

Ženy Paříže této doby se musely den co den setkávat tváří v tvář s německými přemožiteli a okupanty – když jim prodávaly své šaty, aby si obstaraly prostředky na nákup potravin, či s nimi bok po boku cestovaly pařížským metrem, kde přednostní právo usednout měl německý voják. Simone de Beauvoir 9. června napsala: „Vnímala jsem postup Němců jako osobní hrozbu. Měla jsem jen jedinou myšlenku, abych nebyla oddělena od Jean-Paula Sartra a nezůstala v okupované Paříži lapena jako krysa v pasti.“
V knize spisovatelky Anny Sebba se setkáme se širokou paletou ženských charakterů, od kolaborantek přes účastnice odboje, učitelky, spisovatelky, až po herečky a prostitutky a poznáváme, jak se rozhodnutí o životě a smrti stávala jejich každodenností. Anne Sebba se nesnaží knihou poskytovat vysvětlení, proč pařížské ženy učinily daná rozhodnutí a zvolily určitou cestu. Sdílí s námi vyprávění o jejich činech, přesvědčivé životní příběhy a pozoruhodný výběr fotografií, což dohromady promlouvá samo za sebe.
