Mary Shelleyová
Britská spisovateľka Mary Shelleyová, autorka románu Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, sa narodila 30. augusta 1797 v Londýne.

Román Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus (Frankenstein alebo Moderný Prométeus) vyšiel 11. marca 1818.
Precestovali Nemecko, Taliansko a Švajčiarsko.

The Last Man

The last man! I may well describe that solitary being's feelings, feeling myself as the last relic of a beloved race, my companions extinct before me.' Mary Shelley, Journal (May 1824). Best remembered as the author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley wrote The Last Man eight years later, on returning to England from Italy after her husband's death. It is the twenty-first century, and England is a republic governed by a ruling elite, one of whom, Adrian, Earl of Windsor, has introduced a Cumbrian boy to the circle. This outsider, Lionel Verney, narrates the story, a tale of complicated, tragic love, and of the gradual extermination of the human race by plague. The Last Man also functions as an intriguing roman a clef, for the saintly Adrian is a monument to Percy Bysshe Shelley, and his friend Lord Raymond is a portrait of Byron. The novel offers a vision of the future that expresses a reaction against Romanticism, as Shelley demonstrates the failure of the imagination and of art to redeem her doomed characters.

Frankenstein

Originally published anonymously in 1818, Mary Shelley's story of a scientist who creates life and then is horrified by what he has made was inspired by a dream and by conversations with her friends Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Polidori. One of the earliest examples of science fiction, it has since spawned a genre of horror stories. Like the other titles in this series of affordable classics, this book has been reset in fresh type. It includes a frontispiece illustration and a brief biography of the author.

Frankenstein

Never did I behold a vision so horrible as his face, of such loathsome, yet appalling hideousness'. A twisted, upside-down creation myth, Mary Shelley's chilling Gothic tale lays bare the dark side of science, and the horror within us all. It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, who plunders graveyards to create a new being from the bodies of the dead - but whose botched creature causes nothing but murder and destruction. Written after a nightmare when its author was only eighteen, "Frankenstein" gave birth to the modern science fiction novel. Frankenstein

Since it was first published in 1818, Mary Shelley's seminal novel has generated countless print, stage and screen adaptations, but none has ever matched the power and philosophical resonance of the original. Composed as part of a challenge with Byron and Shelley to conjure up the most terrifying ghost story, Frankenstein narrates the chilling tale of a being created by a bright young scientist and the catastrophic consequences that ensue. Considered by many to be the first science-fiction novel, the tragic tale of Victor Frankenstein and the tortured creation he rejects is a classic fable about the pursuit of knowledge, the nature of beauty and the monstrosity inherent to man.

Frankenstein
