Mary Shelleyová
Britská spisovateľka Mary Shelleyová, autorka románu Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, sa narodila 30. augusta 1797 v Londýne.

Román Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus (Frankenstein alebo Moderný Prométeus) vyšiel 11. marca 1818.
Precestovali Nemecko, Taliansko a Švajčiarsko.

The Last Man

The last man! I may well describe that solitary being's feelings, feeling myself as the last relic of a beloved race, my companions extinct before me.' Mary Shelley, Journal (May 1824). Best remembered as the author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley wrote The Last Man eight years later, on returning to England from Italy after her husband's death. It is the twenty-first century, and England is a republic governed by a ruling elite, one of whom, Adrian, Earl of Windsor, has introduced a Cumbrian boy to the circle. This outsider, Lionel Verney, narrates the story, a tale of complicated, tragic love, and of the gradual extermination of the human race by plague. The Last Man also functions as an intriguing roman a clef, for the saintly Adrian is a monument to Percy Bysshe Shelley, and his friend Lord Raymond is a portrait of Byron. The novel offers a vision of the future that expresses a reaction against Romanticism, as Shelley demonstrates the failure of the imagination and of art to redeem her doomed characters.

Frankenstein

What happens when Man plays God? Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a dark parable of science misused was an immediate success on its publication in 1818. Determined to prove he can create life out of nothing, Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but arrogant scientist, builds a human out of dead flesh. Horrified by his own creation, he abandons the creature—with deadly consequences. Alone, unloved, and hideous to behold, Frankenstein’s monster seeks vengeance on his creator, unleashing a cycle of destruction that ultimately consumes them both. In 1831, Mary Shelley succumbed to conservative pressure and toned down the more radical elements of the work. This edition features the novel in its original, unexpurgated form. The world's greatest works of literature are now available in these beautiful keepsake volumes. Bound in real cloth, and featuring gilt edges and ribbon markers, these beautifully produced books are a wonderful way to build a handsome library of classic literature. These are the essential novels that belong in every home. They'll transport readers to imaginary worlds and provide excitement, entertainment, and enlightenment for years to come. All of these novels feature attractive illustrations and have an unequalled period feel that will grace the library, the bedside table or bureau.

Frankenstein

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. 'It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open...' Written when Mary Shelley was only nineteen-years old, this chilling tale of a young scientist's desire to create life still resonates today. Victor Frankenstein's monster is stitched together from the stolen limbs of the dead, and the result is a grotesque being who, rejected by his maker, sets out on a journey to reek his revenge. In the most famous gothic horror story ever told, Shelley confronts the limitations of science, the nature of human cruelty and the pathway to forgiveness with rich language and evocative imagery.

Frankenstein
