"Minden állat egyenlő, de néhány állat egyenlőbb a többinél." E szállóigévé vált mondat nagyjából össze is foglalja George Orwell 1945-ben megjelent kisregényének lényegét. Az 1984 mellett kétségkívül az Állatfarm az angol író legismertebb és legnagyobb hatású műve, amely szintén a totális diktatúrák működési mechanizmusát mutatja be - nem véletlen, hogy Magyarországon mindkét regény évtizedeken át csak szamizdat kiadásban volt olvasható.
A két mű közötti legfőbb különbség az, hogy míg az 1984 egy elképzelt - igencsak ijesztő - jövő krónikája, az Állatfarm a múlt, konkrétan a szovjet forradalom és a sztálini diktatúra kiépülésének allegóriája. A parodisztikus történet hőseiben könnyen felismerhetők a legjelentősebb szovjet politikusok (Lenin, Sztálin és Trockij), illetve a különböző állatok által szimbolizált szervezetek vagy társadalmi rétegek.
