Kniha Místa na půl cesty pojednává o tom, jak na počátku roku 2002 přešel Skot Rory Stewart pěšky celý Afghánistán. Země měla za sebou více než dvacet let válek, hnutí Tálibán bylo západní koalicí svrženo teprve nedávno, situace zůstávala nepřehledná. Stewart nebezpečnou cestu horskou krajinou uprostřed kruté zimy přežil díky své znalosti perských dialektů, muslimských zvyků a vlídnosti místních lidí. Během dne procházel horskými průsmyky pokrytými třemi metry sněhu, osadami vypálenými Tálibánem, mezi pozůstatky ztracené středověké civilizace, či vesnicemi, v nichž jedinou známkou moderního světa byl kalašnikov. V noci spal na podlahách vesničanů, jedl s nimi a poslouchal jejich příběhy o dávné i nedávné minulosti.
