Přestože je A. Strindberg spojován především se sociálním románem, v úvodní povídce se s touto tematikou setkáváme jen okrajově. To podstatné, a u Strindberga nové, je romantické snění hlavního hrdiny Alrika Lundstedta, který si vytváří svůj vlastní svět, jenž se chtě nechtě střetává s realitou. Další příběhy zasadil autor na ostrovy Paradín a Ostudec. Tím hlavním tématem zde již není vysněný svět hlavních postav, tady jde především o kontrasty. Paradín (hora dobrořečení) a Ostudec (hora zlořečení) skrývají pod falešnou maskou svou pravou tvář, takže záhy vyvstane otázka, kde je vlastně dobro a kde zlo.

V románu Čandala se August Strindberg (1849–1912) inspiroval svými zážitky z pobytu na zchátralém zámku Skovlyst nedaleko Kodaně od května do září 1888, kde se stejně jako hlavní postava dostal do konfliktu se správcem zámku. Napínavý příběh vypravuje o nelítostném soupeření dvou mužů, magistra Törnera a správce zámku Jensena, které se odbývá pod slupkou zdvořilosti a přátelství, Strindberg by řekl pod maskami. Je to boj na život a na smrt, podle zásady „jestliže nezničím já tebe, zničíš ty mne“. Strindberg tuto rivalitu vystihl a popsal do těch nejintimnějších podrobností. Pojem „čandala“, který označuje nejnižší kastu v indické společnosti, převzal od Friedricha Nietzscheho. Kultivovaný a vzdělaný „nadčlověk“ Törner nakonec zvítězí nad „barbarem“ Jensenem, a to proto, že opustí morálku a jedná také „barbarsky“. Intelekt „nadčlověka“ magistra Törnera se plně projeví v závěrečné scéně při likvidaci odpůrce pomocí laterny magiky. br / Strindberg považoval Čandalu za kriminální román a podle švédského literárního vědce a kritika Ulfa Olssona pojednává Čandala také o člověku, který nedovede ovládat své vlastní impulsy, a který je proto nucen poznat, jak se „z uvolněných atomů duše pozvedává mocný hlas přírody“.
