Jakkoliv někdy hořký, často cynický či sarkastický humor najdeme i v takových dílech jako je Tanec smrti, zde Strindberg dokazuje, že ve šťastnějším období svého života uměl napsat několik komedií plných vtipu a brilantně chytlavého dialogu. Patří k nim i Hra s ohněm.

Příběh stárnoucích manželů, kteří nedokáží žít ani spolu ani bez sebe. Hru napsal Strindberg na konci svého naturalistického období a tak se tu vedle psychologické drobnokresby objevují prvky expresionistické zběsilosti a groteskní komiky. Jistě není náhodou, že na základě právě této hry napsal Friedrich Dürrenmatt svou neméně slavnou hru Play Strindberg.
