The tradition of the two-door luxury car began early in the history of the Rolls-Royce and Bentley marques. In the 1950s, its most famous realisation was the Bentley Continental, but that name was not revived when the new generation of monocoque models arrived in the mid-1960s. Děj románu se odehrává v Cambridgi roku 1786. Do uzavřeného světa Jeruzalémské koleje přijíždí z Londýna z pověření lady Anny Oldershawové John Holdsworth, aby vyšetřil nejasné okolnosti, jež vedly ke ztrátě paměti u jejího syna Franka, který se údajně setkal s duchem. Holdsworth má pro takové poslání veškeré předpoklady - pod tíhou osobní tragédie, ve které přišel nejprve o malého syna a posléze i o ženu, sepsal a vydal útlý spisek pojednávající o fenoménu duchů.
