In 991 AD, vikings attacked an Anglo-Saxon defence-force led by their duke, Beorhtnoth, resulting in brutal fighting along the river Blackwater, near Maldon in Essex. Vánoční dopisy svým dětem psal J. R. R. Tolkien od roku 1920, kdy byly jeho prvorozenému synkovi Johnovi právě tři roky, do roku 1943, kdy bylo jeho nejmladšímu dítěti, dceři Priscille, čtrnáct let. V roli Otce Vánoc jim každoročně sděloval, že dostal jejich dopisy se seznamem vánočních přání, a vyprávěl o událostech na severním pólu; o vánočních přípravách, o svých pomocnících, o vítězných bojích se skřety. Svoje líčení obvykle doprovázel kresbami, do jeho dopisů čas od času zasahoval jeho hlavní pomocník Lední medvěd či tajemník elf Ilbereth. Díky půvabným kresbám, vtipu, i motivům, které připomenou Tolkienovy romány, jsou Dopisy Otce Vánoc víc než jen soukromým dokumentem rodinného života. Poprvé vyšly v omezeném výběru nedlouho po Tolkienově smrti; z této edice vychází i první české vydání z roku 1994 (Dopisy Děda Mráze).
