Súbor príbehov, ktoré spolu dávajú obraz Sveta, od Stvorenia až do doby ľudskej (i keď veľmi dávnej). Kniha vznikala s prestávkami v priebehu viac ako päťdesiat rokov. Tolkien celý život vytváral tento svet, svet v ktorom sa odohrávajú príbehy Silmar illionu a svet, ktorý poznajú a obdivujú milióny čitateľov. Tak vznikala Stredozem, Aman, Valinor, stovky postáv, udalostí, okamihov ich života, tak vznikali nové mýty a písma.

Toliken zasvětil svůj život vytvářením Středozemě; krom Hobita, Pána prstenů a Silmarillionu se k ní váže i řada jiných příběhů. Mezi ně patří i Příhody Toma Bombadila, cyklus básní a písní o této tajemné bytosti. Součástí svazku je ale i několik povídek, které vznikaly vedle středozemského cyklu - Sedlák Jiljí z Oujezda, Kovář z Velké Lesné, List od Nimrala a Tulák Rover.

Hobit je kniha dejovo spojená s trilógiou Pán Prsteňov. Tolkien v príbehu o Pánovi Prsteňov vlastne pokračoval v rozbehnutom deji z Hobita. Kniha o Bilbových dobrodružstvách nás preto oveľa ľahšie vovedie do konštrukcie fiktívnej histórie Stredozeme a zoznámi nás s postavami, ktoré neskôr, v už spomínanej trilógii, zohrávajú dôležité úlohy. Silmarillion opisuje všetky najdôležitejšie udalosti imaginárneho Sveta, od jeho stvorenia v hudbe Ainur po koniec Tretieho veku. Príbehy hovoria o vzniku Stredozeme, o jej mytológii a najstaršej histórii, o národoch, ktoré v nej žili v dobách pred veľkými udalosťami v knihe Pán Prsteňov. Rozpráva o osude troch klenotov – silmarillov – ktoré vyrobil najnadanejší z elfov Fëanor, a ktorých sa zmocnil Morgoth. Príbehy a legendy ústrednej časti knihy sa zaoberajú veľkými udalosťami Prvého veku. Těchto sedm esejů představuje Tolkiena jako literárního vědce, překladatele i romanopisce, a přestože vyvěrají z Tolkienova zájmu o středověkou literaturu, jsou přístupné všem čtenářům. Nejslavnější je však jeho esej O pohádkách, v němž se zamýšlí nad povahou pohádek a fantastických příběhů a dává nám nahlédnout, jak on sám k tomuto žánru přistupoval.

Nedokončené príbehy Númenoru a Stredozeme sú súborom príbehov, ktoré pokrývajú celé časové pásmo od prehistorických Starých časov Stredozeme, detailne opisovaných v Silmarillione, až po Vojnu o Prsteň, ktorou vrcholí trilógia Pán prsteňov. Netvoria ucelený dejový prúd, ale ponúkajú čitateľovi ojedinelú možnosť zoznámiť sa s neskoršími či podrobnejšími verziami príbehov, s ktorými sa už stretol v predchádzajúcich knihách, nahliadnuť do procesu Tolkienovej tvorby a znalosť už známych dejov obohatiť o doposiaľ nepublikované úryvky a zlomky rozprávania. Obsiahly zväzok z autorovej pozostalosti usporiadal a komentárom a poznámkami doplnil Tolkienov syn Christopher, ktorý je aj autorom bohatého informatívneho registra.

Pán Prsteňov je rozprávkovou históriou Vojny o Prsteň. rozprávaním o boji slobodných národov Stredozeme proti Tieňu a o putovaní Hobita Froda. ktorý sa vyberie zachrániť svet. Čarovný svet elfov a hobitov je paralelným svetom „veľkých ľudí“. Jeho hlavnou témou je Prsteň ako ohnivko.,ktoré ho púta k Hobitovi. Proti akýmkoľvek alegóriám sa autor bránil a všetky možné posolstvá a vnútorné významy spájané s jeho knihou sa mu zo srdca protivili. Preto je túto knihu potrebné chápať ako najobľúbenejšie dejiny pradávneho veku a nijako inak. „Tento príbeh narastal pri rozprávaní, až sa stal dejinami Veľkej vojny o Prsteň a obsahuje mnoho pohľadov do ešte starodávnejších dejín, ktoré mu predchádzali“ – napísal v predslove k druhému vydaniu J. R. R. Tolkien o tejto vari najznámejšej knižnej trilógii minulého storočia. Pán Prsteňov bol doteraz preložený do 22 jazykov a vo svete sa doteraz predalo vyše 50 miliónov kusov. Trilógiu do slovenčiny preložil po prvý krát Otakar Kořínek.

Legenda z Dávnoveku sa odohráva tisícky rokov pred udalosťami, ktoré Tolkien opisuje v Pánovi prsteňov. Húrin, pán z Dor-lóminu, vzdoruje Morgothovi, ktorý predstavuje zlo. Ten ho zajme a uvalí kliatbu na neho aj jeho rodinu, na jeho syna Túrina a dcéru Niënor. Túrin je odvážny muž, ktorý sa vyznamenáva v bojoch proti Morgothovým spojencom, ale kliatba poznačí jeho osud.
