Mark Twain se neptá, jak přežít smutnou náladu, naopak - každá ze sedmnácti povídek tohoto souboru je malou pilulkou proti splínu a představuje svého autora v trochu jiném světle, než jak ho čeští čtenáři dosud znali. S humorem, místy hodně sarkastickým a kousavým, uděluje rady do života, vede přednášku o vědní disciplíně zvané onanologie, nebo se zamýšlí nad úskalími německého jazyka. Povídky vycházejí v českém překladu poprvé a nejsou pouhým ohlednutím do literární minulosti. Stáří jim nikterak neubírá na vtipu.
