Holandský lékař Eddy de Wind i jeho manželka Friedel byli odvlečeni do Osvětimi. Po příjezdu přežili krutou selekci a byli pracovně zařazeni na ošetřovny. Každý den a každou hodinu se v koncentračním táboře odehrával nelítostný boj o přežití – pro Eddyho to znamenalo přizpůsobit se nepředvídatelným reakcím dozorců, Friedel musela od sebe odvrátit hrozící osud oběti „lékařských“ experimentů Josepha Mengeleho. Sílu jim dodávala vzájemná láska: Friedel a Eddy si občas dokázali prostrčit přes plot lístek a výjimečně se dokonce odvážili kratičkého objetí.
Když na konci války uprchli poslední dozorci, Eddy se schoval v opuštěných barácích a začal se zuřivým úsilím zapisovat svoje zážitky. Vznikl zcela ojedinělý záznam vězeňského života ve vyhlazovacím táboře zachycující z bezprostřední blízkosti každodenní boj o život, ale i záblesky radosti, když se Eddymu a Friedel podařilo zahlédnout jeden druhého.

Konečná stanica Osvienčim
Hans myslel na Friedel, stratil jej rad z dohľadu. Pomyslel si na matku, brata a na všetkých tých, ktorých videl odchádzať do Osvienčimu. Myslel na štúdium, na svoju prax a na svoje ideály. Znova si vybavil Friedel a ich plány do budúcnosti. Takto premýšľa niekto, kto je presvedčený, že zomrie.
Atmosféra bola dusná, zmrákalo sa a za oknami sa črtali ženské postavy ako siluety v starom rozprávkovom divadle. Bol sparný večer babieho leta a vo vzduchu sa vznášalo tajomstvo. Ako v príbehu z Tisíc a jednej noci stáli mladíci pri tomto veľkom háreme, plní túžby po svojich milovaných. A tu sa ozýval jej hlas tak, ako pieseň z ďalekého minaretu, nesúca sa tichou nocou Orientu. Ako sen plný melanchólie a túžby. Tichý ako šepot milencov v ústraní a melancholický ako spev imáma, ktorý sklonený k zemi spieva k Prorokovi.
Veda znamená robiť výskum a z neho vyvodzovať závery. V Nemecku je záver stanovený už vopred. Musí byť v súlade s dogmami štátu. Pokiaľ ide o čisto technické objavy, napríklad pre vojnový priemysel alebo medicínu, výsledky výskumu sa ochotne prijímajú, no len čo sa nemecký vedec pustí do oblasti histórie alebo fi lozofi e, vopred vie, k akému záveru bude musieť jeho výskum viesť. A ak by bol natoľko hlúpy, že by dospel k výsledku, ktorý je v rozpore s národno-socialistickou náukou, potom by to pre neho znamenalo rýchly koniec.
Auschwitz, végállomás - Egy túlélő története a haláltáborból
Eddy ?de Wind zsidó orvos önként jelentkezett abba a hollandiai gyűjtőtáborba, ahová édesanyját deportálták. Azt remélte, hogy így az asszonyt meg tudja menteni Auschwitztól, de tévedett. A táborban megismert szerelmével együtt 1943-ban őt is a haláltáborba vagonírozták.
Amikor a szovjet hadsereg közeledésének hírére a nácik 1944-ben elindították Németország felé az erőltetett meneteket, Eddy elrejtőzött, és a felszabadulás után ott maradt Auschwitzban ellátni a betegeket. Keresett egy ceruzát és egy jegyzetfüzetet, és írni kezdett.
Könyve a legelső Auschwitz-beszámolók egyike, amelyet a csak nem sokkal korábban átélt borzalmak és maga a nyers valóság tesz átütő erejűvé. Jelenlegi ismereteink szerint ez az egyetlen memoár, amelyet teljes egészében az auschwitzi haláltáborban írtak.
De Wind kötete először 1946-ban jelent meg, hogy aztán hosszú évekkel később, a tábor felszabadításának 75. évfordulójára, 2020-ban nemcsak hollandul, de számos más nyelven, így magyarul is napvilágot lásson. Az eredeti holland kiadás szószedettel, térképpel és a leszármazottak, valamint a fordító utószavával bővült. A kötetet a család archívumából származó képanyag illusztrálja.
