Daiyu se nikdy nechtěla podobat tragické hrdince ze slavného čínského románu, po níž dostala jméno. Stanu se někým, kdo se nebude přizpůsobovat vůli osudu, sama napíšu svůj vlastní odkaz, slibovala si. Její šťastné dětství je však přerváno zmizením rodičů a ona se musí ze dne na den vzdát domova i budoucnosti, kterou si pro sebe představovala. V chlapeckém převleku a pod falešným jménem prchá z venkova do města, kde se jí podaří získat práci v kaligrafické škole. Talentem a pílí zaujme svého mistra, a dokonce sní, že se stane učitelem jako on. Zároveň věří, že když pochopí podstatu kaligrafie, její život se změní. Pak ale přichází další rána, když je na rybím trhu unesena a po čase propašována do San Francisca, kde má být dalším přírůstkem v čínském nevěstinci.
