Hrdinka, bez jakýchkoli znalostí o přežití v divoké přírodě, se nevyhne střetnutí s chřestýši a medvědy, překonává úmorná vedra či rekordní sníh. Napínavé vyprávění okořeněné humorem živě zachycuje strach i radost mladé ženy tvrdě si razící cestu k cíli navzdory mizivé šanci na úspěch.
I díky němu vzniklo humorem okořeněné vyprávění o odvaze mladé ženy, která si tvrdohlavě razí cestu k zvolenému a hodně vzdálenému cíli.

Klíč k životu
Kniha Klíč k životu přináší vzpomínky Miroslava Vitouše (*1947), českého jazzového kontrabasisty a baskytaristy. S bratrem Alanem a klávesistou Janem Hammerem ml. založil v roce 1961 Junior Trio, nejslibnější českou jazzovou kapelu všech dob. Hrál a nahrával alba se světovou jazzovou elitou (Chick Corea, Herbie Mann, Miles Davis, Jack DeJohnette, John McLaughlin, Terje Rypdal, Herbie Hancock, Jan Garbarek, Stan Getz, Michel Petrucciani a další). Je zakládajícím členem skupiny Weather Report, s níž natočil její první, nejlepší alba, a leaderem vlastní Miroslav Vitous Group. Natočil též několik desítek vlastních alb a na mnohých jiných hostoval jako vyhledávaný hudebník.
Jeho vzpomínky opisují široký oblouk od začátků hry na housle, sportovní plavecké kariéry, studia na pražské konzervatoři u Františka Pošty, přes odchod do USA, kde se brzy ocitl v samém středu hned několika velmi významných hudebních uskupení a směrů, až po postupný návrat do Evropy a domů. Svoji hudební kariéru popisuje Miroslav Vitouš obdivuhodně stručně, neztrácí čas předstíráním, že je něco jinak. Podobně bez mlžení mapuje i svůj osobní život včetně řady nedorozumění a kotrmelců ve vztazích. Nešetří popisem životních úspěchů ani kritikou, dává nahlédnout pod pokličku svého úspěchu, vybírá to nejlepší ze své hudební tvorby a čtenář je tak od prvních stránek naplno vtažen do těchto neobyčejných českých vzpomínek psaných v americkém stylu.

I Hate Men
The feminist book they tried to ban in France
'A delightful book' Roxane Gay
Women, especially feminists and lesbians, have long been accused of hating men. Our instinct is to deny it at all costs. (After all, women have been burnt at the stake for admitting to less.)
But what if mistrusting men, disliking men - and yes, maybe even hating men - is, in fact, a useful response to sexism? What if such a response offers a way out of oppression, a means of resistance? What if it even offers a path to joy, solidarity and sisterhood?
In this sparkling essay, as mischievous and provocative as it is urgent and serious, Pauline Harmange interrogates modern attitudes to feminism and makes a rallying cry for women to find a greater love for each other - and themselves.

Velryba
Last Bus to Woodstock
The first intriguing case that began Colin Dexter’s phenomenally successful Inspector Morse series.
‘Do you think I'm wasting your time, Lewis?’
Lewis was nobody’s fool and was a man of some honesty and integrity.
‘Yes, sir.’
An engaging smile crept across Morse’s mouth. He thought they could get on well together . . .
The death of Sylvia Kaye figured dramatically in Thursday afternoon’s edition of the Oxford Mail. By Friday evening, Inspector Morse had informed the nation that the police were looking for a dangerous man.
But as the obvious leads fade into twilight and darkness, Morse becomes more and more convinced that passion holds the key . . .
Last Bus to Woodstock is followed by the second Inspector Morse book, Last Seen Wearing.
Platonic
In Platonic, psychologist and friendship expert Dr Marisa G. Franco unpacks why undervaluing friendship in our culture has led to an epidemic of isolation, and what we can do about it.
When was the last time you put yourself out there to make a new friend?
How do we keep friends in an era of distraction, burnout, and chaos, especially in a society that often prizes romantic love at the expense of other relationships?
This book offers a clear and actionable blueprint for forging strong and lasting connections with others – and becoming our happiest selves in the process.
Using the groundbreaking framework behind attachment theory, this book teaches us to identify and understand our individual style – secure, anxious or avoidant – and recognize that how we behave in relationships is the key to unlocking what we’re doing right (and what we could do better) in our friendships.
Weaving together cutting-edge research in psychology with interviews, personal stories and practical advice, this book gives us the tools we need to be better friends, and better humans.
The Principle of Moments
6066: In Emperor Thracin's brave new galaxy, humans are not citizens but indentured labourers, working to repay the debt they unwittingly incurred when they settled on Gahraan - a desert planet already owned by the emperor himself. Asha Akindele knows she's just another voiceless cog working the assembly lines that fuel his vast imperial war machine. Her only rebellion: studying stolen aeronautics manuals in the dead of night. But then a cloaked stranger arrives to deliver an impossible message, and her life changes in an instant.
1812: Obi Amadi is done with time-travelling. Never mind the fact he doesn't know how to cure himself of the temporal sickness he caught whilst anchoring his soul to Regency London, the one that unmakes him further with every jump. Or if the prince he loves will ever love him back. Or why his father disappeared. He is done. Until he hears about the ghost of a girl in the British Museum. A girl from another time.
When Obi's path tangles with Asha's and a prophecy awakens in the cold darkness of space, they must voyage through the stars, racing against time, tyranny, and the legacy of three heroes from an ancient religion who may be awakening, reincarnated in ways beyond comprehension.
A love letter to Black readers of science-fantasy, The Principle of Moments is a symphonic, centuries-spanning adventure - unmissable for fans of the spacefaring found family of Becky Chambers, the alternate London of V. E. Schwab, and the virtuosic climate-craft of N. K. Jemisin.

What Monstrous Gods
A rich and romantic fantasy loosely inspired by the classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. Perfect for fans of These Violent Delights and The Shadow Queen.
Centuries ago, the heretic sorcerer Ruven raised a deadly briar around Runakhia's palace, casting the royal family into an enchanted sleep—and silencing the kingdom's gods.
Born with a miraculous gift, Lia's destiny is to kill Ruven and wake the royals. But when she succeeds, she finds her duty is not yet complete, for now she must marry into the royal family and forge a pact with a god—or die.
To make matters even worse, Ruven's spirit is haunting her.
As discord grows between the old and new guards, the queen sends Lia and Prince Araunn, her betrothed, on a pilgrimage to awaken the gods. But the old gods are more dangerous than Lia ever knew—and Ruven may offer her only hope of survival.
As the two work together, Lia learns that they're more alike than she expected. And with tensions rising, Lia must choose between what she was raised to believe and what she knows is right—and between the prince she is bound to by duty … and the boy she killed.

The Once and Future Sex
What makes for the ideal woman? How should she look, love, and be? In this vibrant, high-spirited history, medievalist Eleanor Janega turns to the Middle Ages, the era that bridged the ancient world and modern society, to unfurl its suppositions about women and reveal what’s shifted over time?and what hasn’t.
Enshrined medieval thinkers, almost always male, subscribed to a blend of classical Greek and Roman philosophy and Christian theology for their concepts of the sexes. For the height of female attractiveness, they chose the mythical Helen of Troy, whose imagined pear shape, small breasts, and golden hair served as beauty’s epitome. Casting Eve’s shadow over medieval women, they derided them as oversexed sinners, inherently lustful, insatiable, and weak. And, unless a nun, a woman was to be the embodiment of perfect motherhood.
In contrast, drawing on accounts of remarkable and subversive medieval women like Eleanor of Aquitaine and Hildegard of Bingen, along with others hidden in documents and court cases, Janega shows us how real women of the era lived. While often mothers, they were industrious farmers, brewers, textile workers, artists, and artisans and paved the way for new ideas about women’s nature, intellect, and ability.
In The Once and Future Sex, Janega unravels the restricting expectations on medieval women and the ones on women today. She boldly questions why, if our ideas of women have changed drastically over time, we cannot reimagine them now to create a more equitable future.

Empireworld
From the award-winning author of Empireland – the book that started a national conversation about how we talk about race and imperial history in Britain – a ground-breaking exploration of how British empire has shaped the world we live in today.
Empireland examined imperialism's lasting impact on Britain. Empireworld traces the legacies of British empire across the globe.
2.6 billion people are inhabitants of former British colonies. The empire's influence upon the quarter of the planet it occupied, and its gravitational influence upon the world outside it, has been profound: from the spread of Christianity by missionaries, to nearly 1 in 3 driving on the left side of the road, to the origins of international law. Yet Britain's idea of its imperial history and the world's experience of it are two very different things.
In Empireworld, award-winning author and journalist, Sathnam Sanghera extends his examination of British imperial legacies beyond Britain. With an inimitable combination of wit, political insight and personal honesty, he explores the international legacies of British empire – from the creation of tea plantations across the globe, to environmental destruction, conservation, and the imperial connotations of Royal tours. His journey takes him from Barbados and Mauritius to India and Nigeria and beyond. In doing so, Sanghera demonstrates just how deeply British imperialism is baked into our world. And why it’s time Britain was finally honest with itself about empire.
The Great Divide
A breathtaking historical novel following the incredible construction of the Panama Canal and casting light on the unsung people who lived and laboured in its shadow - by acclaimed author Cristina Henriquez.
It is said that the Canal will be the greatest feat of engineering in history. But first, it must be built.
Ada Bunting, a bold sixteen-year-old from Barbados, arrives alone in Panama as a stowaway alongside thousands of other West Indians seeking work in the grand building project of the Canal. Francisco, a local fisherman, resents the foreign nations clamouring for a slice of his country, but nothing is more upsetting for him than his son Omar's decision to work as a digger. For Omar, whose upbringing was quiet and lonely, this job offers a chance to finally find connection and independence. Scientist John Oswald has come from further afield. He has journeyed to Panama in pursuit of one goal: eliminating malaria. But everything hangs in the balance as his wife Marian falls ill herself.
When John witnesses an act of bravery and compassion from Ada one day, he hires her on the spot as a caregiver for his wife. This fateful decision sets in motion a sweeping tale of ambition, loyalty, and sacrifice.
Breathtaking and impossible to put down, The Great Divide explores the lives of the labourers, fishmongers, journalists, protesters, doctors and soothsayers who lived alongside the construction of the Canal - those rarely acknowledged by history even as they carved out its course.
