Mapping the City
Eternal, saintly, imperial, maritime, capital, provincial, old, modern, besieged, open, new, colonial, industrial, fortified, touristic, the city can be seen under a number of aspects since its first appearance in Mesopotomia and the Indus valley 10000 years ago. Today half of the people on this planet live in towns. The understanding of the urban environment was gradual and plural. 200 beautiful and significant maps from the Royal Geographical Society show how men have thought of and then represented the city in more and more sophisticated ways. This book includes representations from the Babylonian earthenware tablets to the very precise plans from the middle of the 20th century, as well as paintings and medieval illuminations. No matter how unrealistic some of the maps can be, the reader is taken to cities, boroughs and metropolises throughout history in places as diverse as Jerusalem, Istanbul, Jakarta, Edinburgh or New York. An invaluable historical and cultural testimony.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Other Novels
Famous during his lifetime as a humorist and for his incandescent social satires, Mark Twain is most often thought of today as a novelist whose precise language and vividly drawn characters introduce readers to tales steeped in concern with personal freedom and social responsibility. Twain's best-known novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and the Pauper and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (regarded by many as the Great American Novel) are landmarks of literature that continue to entertain modern readers with their wit and insight into the American experience of the nineteenth century. As popular in their day as they remain still, the five novels in this literary omnibus are tales for the ages that testify to the genius of Mark Twain. This distinguished collectible edition features an elegant bonded-leather binding, a satin ribbon bookmark, distinctive gilt edging and deocrative endpapers. Devore is hell-bent on getting custody of his deceased sons daughter and is twisting the fabric of the community to this purpose. Three year old Kyra and her young mother turn to Mike for help. The Shining. Danny is only five years old, but in the words of old Mr Hallorann he is a shiner, aglow with psychic voltage. When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Dannys visions grow out of control. As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own. It is meant to be empty. So who is the lady in Room 217 and who are the masked guests going up and down in the elevator. And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive. Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel - and that, too, is beginning to shine.
Christine. Christine, blood-red, fat, and finned, is twenty. Her promise lies all in her past. Greedy and big, she is Arnies obsession, a 58 Plymouth Fury. Broken down but not finished. There is still power in her -a frightening power that leaks like sump oil, staining and corrupting. A malign power that corrodes the mind and turns ownership into Possession. By Halloween, every major city from New York to Moscow stank to the empty heavens and the world as it had been was a memory. The event became known as The Pulse. The virus was carried by every cell phone operating within the entire world. Within hours, those receiving calls would be infected. A young artist Clayton Riddell realises what is happening. He flees the devastation of explosive, burning Boston, desperate to reach his son before his son switches on his little red mobile phone.

Europe isn't Working
A timely and provocative account of why the euro has failed and why, as a result, the Union will unravel Europe's center-left is rapidly falling out of love with the European single currency. Fifteen years after its creation, British journalists Larry Elliott and Dan Atkinson assess its performance to show why. Looking at a range of key indicators the authors show how the euro has failed to deliver on its promise of more jobs, more growth and greater equality. Instead it has undermined the European Union. Elliott and Atkinson compare the European Central Bank to the Federal Reserve, arguing that the architects of the euro subjugated economic measures to political considerations. Consequently, countries that didn't meet the economic convergence criteria were still allowed entry. The end result is a dysfunctional currency union that is unable to cope with difficult economic circumstances. Assessing the situations in Greece, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, and Iceland, as well as Britain, they show that the current policy of kicking the can down the road and hoping that something will turn up is proving increasingly unpopular with the currency's one-time fans in progressive politics. This engaging and accessibly written volume will be widely read by economists, pundits, and policymakers as Britian considers its future relationship with Europe.

Jsme z masa a kostí a abychom vyrovnali strasti našeho nedokonalého pozemského života, zlehčit situaci prostě musíme.
No a proto lze vtipkovat o všem. Když nám do nakladatelství autoři Christopher Barickman a Andrea Jandejsková zaslali text knihy, některé vtipy nám připadaly řádně peprné, ba až tvrdší. Zvážili jsme však, že vypovídají o charakteru národů nebo alespoň národních sociálních skupin. A máme-li poznat jejich mentalitu, potom v ryzí podobě. V knize jsme proto dali prostor i humoru drsnějšímu. Zkrátka, život není vždy jen růžové peříčko.

Solar Bones
Longlisted for the 2017 Man Booker Prize Winner of the Goldsmiths Prize Winner of the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards Novel of the Year An Irish Times Book Club Choice "With stylistic gusto, and in rare, spare, precise and poetic prose, Mike McCormack gets to the music of what is happening all around us. One of the best novels of the year." --Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin and TransAtlantic Solar Bones is a masterwork that builds its own style and language one broken line at a time; the result is a visionary accounting of the now. A vital, tender, death-haunted work by one of Ireland's most important contemporary writers, Solar Bones is a celebration of the unexpected beauty of life and of language, and our inescapable nearness to our last end. It is All Souls Day, and the spirit of Marcus Conway sits at his kitchen table and remembers. In flowing, relentless prose, Conway recalls his life in rural Ireland: as a boy and man, father, husband, citizen. His ruminations move from childhood memories of his father's deftness with machines to his own work as a civil engineer, from transformations in the local economy to the tidal wave of global financial collapse. Conway's thoughts go still further, outward to the vast systems of time and history that hold us all. He stares down through the "vortex of his being," surveying all the linked circumstances that combined to bring him into this single moment, and he makes us feel, if only for an instant, all the terror and gratitude that existence inspires.

Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what's more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. I think we could have all lived happily, in a way, God, me and the others, if it weren't for that accursed book. It disgusted me. I knew what bound me to it in the most sickening of ways, but the horror of that particular knowledge came later, much later. I didn't understand straight away, I was too ignorant.

Jeffrey Lockhart's father, Ross, is a billionaire in his sixties, with a younger wife, Artis Martineau, whose health is failing. Ross is the primary investor in a remote and secret compound where death is exquisitely controlled and bodies are preserved until a future time when biomedical advances and new technologies can return them to a life of transcendent promise. Jeff joins Ross and Artis at the compound to say "an uncertain farewell" to her as she surrenders her body. "We are born without choosing to be. Should we have to die in the same manner? Isn't it a human glory to refuse to accept a certain fate?" These are the questions that haunt the novel and its memorable characters, and it is Ross Lockhart, most particularly, who feels a deep need to enter another dimension and awake to a new world. For his son, this is indefensible. Jeff, the book's narrator, is committed to living, to experiencing "the mingled astonishments of our time, here, on earth." Don DeLillo's seductive, spectacularly observed and brilliant new novel weighs the darkness of the world-terrorism, floods, fires, famine, plague-against the beauty and humanity of everyday life; love, awe, "the intimate touch of earth and sun."
