Responsible Object. A History of Design Ideology for the Future
A selected history of socially committed design strategies within the Western tradition, from the past 150 years
Within the design discipline, calls for sustainability and social responsibility have become some of the most common rallying cries of the past decade, generating countless new products, materials and technologies?all designed to change the course of our future. Adjectives like “sustainable,” “green” and “eco” describe this new wave of socially committed design. But though today’s conditions are urgent and particular, the ideologies behind these new products are often not totally new, but rather a part of design history. Contemporary sustainable design is just the newest chapter of a story that stretches back throughout the previous centuries. The Responsible Object presents a selected history of socially committed design strategies within the Western design tradition of roughly the last 150 years, from William Morris to Victor Papanek, and from VKhUTEMAS to FabLab. It includes about 20 interstitial mini-posters with slogans from the text, printed on different colored papers.

Forbidden Brides
A celebrated send-up of gothic literature, beautifully adapted into a dark, brooding, and oddly comical graphic novel. Somewhere in the night, a raven caws, an author's pen scratches, and thunder claps. The author wants to write fiction: stories about frail women in white nightgowns, mysterious bumps in the night, and the undead rising to collect old debts. But he keeps getting interrupted by the everyday annoyances of talking ravens, duels to the death, and his sinister butler.
Shane Oakley beautifully illustrates New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman's satirical tale.

On Europe
First published in her pioneering treatise Statecraft, the opinions and projections of the former Prime Minister on Europe remain potent and resoundingly prophetic.Margaret Thatcher foresaw the European Union as a swelling superstate, gradually eroding Britain's freedom. Irreparable and doomed, European integration did not allow for the birthright of nationhood. It was the most recent incarnation of an idea that has been tried many times before, and the outcomes were far from happy. "During my lifetime," she says, "most of the problems the world has faced have come, in one fashion or other, from mainland Europe, and the solutions from outside it."

Unsheltered
THE NEW NOVEL FROM ORANGE PRIZE WINNER AND INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER BARBARA KINGSOLVER
2016 Vineland
Meet Willa Knox, a woman who stands braced against an upended world that seems to hold no mercy for her shattered life and family - or the crumbling house that contains her.
1871 Vineland
Thatcher Greenwood, the new science teacher, is a fervent advocate of the work of Charles Darwin, and he is keen to communicate his ideas to his students. But those in power in Thatcher's small town have no desire for a new world order. Thatcher and his teachings are not welcome.
Both Willa and Thatcher resist the prevailing logic. Both are asked to pay a high price for their courage. But both also find inspiration -- and an unlikely kindred spirit -- in Mary Treat, a scientist, adventurer and anachronism.
A testament to both the resilience and persistent myopia of the human condition, Unsheltered explores the foundations we build in life, spanning time and place to give us all a clearer look at those around us, and perhaps ourselves. It is a novel that speaks truly to our times.

Reimagining Capitalism
Free market capitalism is one of humanity's greatest inventions and the greatest source of prosperity the world has ever seen. At the same time, its single-minded pursuit of profit has led to rampant inequality and the looming threat of climate catastrophe - and now threatens to destroy the society on which it depends.
Rebecca Henderson, John and Natty McArthur University Professor at Harvard University, argues that business can simultaneously make a positive impact on the world by confronting the realities of our environmental crisis and the need to address social and economic inequality, while also delivering the sustained economic growth that brings prosperity and wellbeing to society as a whole.
Drawing on lessons from companies from around the world who are already making a positive difference, REIMAGINING CAPITALISM shows that this new approach is not only a moral imperative but also an extraordinary opportunity to drive growth and innovation in an increasingly competitive world. And, perhaps most critically, she suggests that it has the potential to balance the power of the market with the power of democratic, accountable government and strong civil society - the only long term solution to the problems that we face.
"This powerful and readable book is a clarion call for reimagining and remaking capitalism.
We can have a more moral and more innovative capitalism. There is hope!" -Daron Acemoglu, coauthor of Why Nations Fail
"A must-read for every person with a stake in our economic system since change or die is the inescapable reality confronting capitalism." -Hiro Mizuno, executive managing director and chief investment officer, GPIF
"A smart, timely, and much-needed reimagining of what capitalism can be." -Yancey Strickler, cofounder and former CEO, Kickstarter, and author of This Could Be Our Future: A Manifesto for a More Generous World

Linda McCartney. The Polaroid Diaries
Following her best-selling TASCHEN monograph Life in Photographs, discover a more intimate and highly personal side of Linda McCartney's photographic work in The Polaroid Diaries.
The collection focuses on McCartney's distinctive way of seeing the world and her family, through charming and quirky portraits of Paul McCartney and the couple's four children. We see them pulling faces and in matching pajamas. We see James pouring water on himself, and Mary and Stella playing dress-up. There's dancing, eating, horse riding, and countless moments of everyday life on their farm in Southern England.
As Paul says in the introduction: "She would just see things. Many of her photos, it's just that one click. You've got to recognise when a great photo is happening in front of you. And then you've got to snap it at exactly the right moment... And she did that so many times that it always impressed me." The Polaroid Diaries curates more than 200 of these "right" moments from the early 1970s until the mid-1990s, along with a foreword by Chrissie Hynde and an essay by art critic Ekow Eshun.
The book also features luminous landscapes across Scotland and Arizona, as well as the odd celebrity, as the likes of Steve McQueen and Adam Ant wander into the frame. Other pictures attest to her love of animals, with compassionate images of cats, lambs, horses, and hens. It's a pre-Instagram glimpse into the life of an extraordinary family, a celebration of Linda's legacy as a fiercely committed artist and of the instant magic of Polaroid film. Also available in a signed Collector's Edition and in two limited Art Editions, each with a print numbered and signed by Paul McCartney.
