Life with Beatles
This book, the latest edition in the "LIFE Great Photographers" series, presents all the best pictures taken by the band's official shooter. In the mid-1960s, when so much was happening and the volume seemed dialled up to 11, the Beatles were the biggest thing on the planet. Their fans wanted to touch the Beatles. Who might help them? Well, one photographer was inside. The young Australian Robert Whitaker had been noticed by Beatles manager Brian Epstein, who hired him. When Beatlemania exploded, Whitaker was along for the wild ride: backstage, in the studio, at the boys' homes. He became their friend and confidante. Bob fashioned many of the iconic Beatles images, and all his pictures were taken in the period that Beatles fans most like to remember. Bob was also a friend of "LIFE". In the months before his death in September 2011, he was collaborating with us on this book, his Beatles magnum opus. In these pages are rarely or never published photographs and personal reflections, which add resonance.

Storm Over Burracombe
Hilary Napier is upset and angry when her father, Colonel Napier, brings in a new manager for the family estate which she has been running for the past year. Even though she cannot help liking Travis Kellaway, she resents his presence. But when her defences are broken down by the illness of her brother's much-loved horse, Major, she realizes Travis's strength and compassion. It isn't long before their relationship moves to a new footing. Meanwhile, life in the Devon village of Burracombe is enlivened by the new Drama Club, formed by energetic young curate Felix Copley. Almost the entire village becomes involved in the pantomime he decides to organise, with sometimes hilarious results. The leading lights in the production are bossy Joyce Warren, young schoolteacher Stella Simmons and Shirley Culliford, the little girl from the poorest cottage in Burracombe. But tragedy strikes when Travis catches Shirley and her father, Arthur Culliford, poaching in the estate woods. Shirley is injured in the ensuing skirmish and it seems that not only the pantomime, but her very life is threatened.

Careless Love - The Unmaking of Elvis Presley
Last Train to Memphis, the first part of Guralnick's two-volume life of Elvis Presley, received unprecedented accolades. This concluding volume recounts the second half of Elvis's life in rich and previously unimagined detail, and confirms Guralnick's status as one of the great biographers of our time. Beginning with Presley's army service in Germany in 1958 and ending with his death in Memphis in 1977, Careless Love chronicles the unraveling of the dream that once shone so brightly, homing in on the complex playing-out of Elvis's relationship with his Machiavellian manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It's a breathtaking drama that places the events of a too often mistold tale in a fresh, believable, and understandable context. This is the quintessential American story, encompassing race, class, wealth, sex, music, religion, and personal transformation. Written with grace, sensitivity, and passion, Careless Love is a unique contribution to our understanding of American popular culture and the nature of success, giving us true insight at last into one of the most misunderstood public figures of our times.

China's Disruptors
In China's Disruptors, Edward Tse takes an unprecedented inside look at rapidly emerging Chinese entrepreneurs and their game-changing impact on both China and the world. In September 2014, Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba raised $25 billion in the world's biggest ever initial public offering. Since then, millions of investors and managers worldwide have pondered a fundamental question: what's really going on with the new wave of China's disruptors? Over the past two decades, an unprecedented burst of entrepreneurialism has transformed China's economy from a closed, impoverished, state-run system into a major power in global business. Alibaba is one of a rising tide of thriving Chinese businesses, and its success has been quickly followed by other previously little-known companies, such as Baidu, Tencent and Xiaomi. Edward Tse is a leading global strategy consultant who has spent more than twenty years working with senior Chinese executives. In China's Disruptors, he draws on exclusive interviews and case studies to reveal how China got to this point and explore what the country's rise means for the rest of the world. No one can explain what is happening in China better than Edward Tse' Sam Su, vice chairman of the board and chairman and CEO of China Division of YUM! Brands, Inc. "A detailed and fascinating study of the changing landscape in China and the entrepreneurs who are driving that change forward. This is a book that will only become increasingly important in the years to come". (Chen Dongsheng, chairman and CEO, Taikang Life Insurance Co. Ltd., and president, China Entrepreneurs Forum).

Rejection Proof
How do you face the fear of rejection? Whether negotiating a pay rise, interviewing for your dream job, taking the first step in a relationship or trying to close a crucial sale, what do you do if the answer is 'No'? Consider it an indication of failure? Accept that defeat was inevitable? Vow never again to put yourself in such a scenario? Jia Jiang chose to tackle his fears head-on. At the age of 30, just before the birth of his first child, he quit his secure six-figure job at a Fortune 500 company and decided to spend 100 days wilfully seeking out scenarios in which he was likely to face rejection. Why? Because it terrified him. In the process of his social experiment, Jia learned how to fly a light aircraft, asked to borrow $100 from a total stranger, and made a minor celebrity of himself and a Krispy Kreme store manager called Jackie. Inspirational, empowering and charming in equal measures, Rejection Proof is the story of Jia's '100 Days of Rejection' project. In it, he shares the secrets of successful asking and negotiation he learned along the way, as well as offering revelatory advice on how we can overcome the fear of rejection.

Punk
The art of Damien Hirst and the music of the Prodigy, the attitude of Liam Gallagher and the hair of Eminem - all owe a great debt to the cultural movement that burrowed through Andy Warhol's Factory and the early 1970s' New York underground, emerging triumphant, kicking and screaming at the top of the British popular music charts, some five years later. Affectionately known as 'punk', it was the spotty, scruffy, bastard offspring of many a grander musical form, but like many a prodigal, went on to become more successful than its forebears, leaving a legacy that is still recognised today. This book gives voice to the punk generation 25 years on, as it remembers the mad, frenzied and often incoherent world of 1975-9. With nearly 100 contributors, including specially commissioned interviews with members and managers of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones, the Heartbreakers, Siouxsie and the Banshees and many others, everybody has had a chance to speak, and their memories are supported by hundreds of previously unpublished photographs. Variously described as middle class, working class, political, social, sexual, aristic, superficial, perverted, puerile and heroic, punk has always inspired contoversy. Now it is for the reader to decide the truth - or truths - that fuelled this unique movement.

Louis van Gaal
So who is Louis van Gaal? An inflexible ex-PE teacher who only knows how to act like a dictator or a footballing visionary that has made him one of the greatest ever European managers? Wherever he has gone, Van Gaal has been accused of being a domineering disciplinarian and a control freak. He is certainly, by his own admission, a man who leaves nothing to chance. A disciple in the 1970s of Rinus Michels' Total Football philosophy, he is a fascinating contradiction - an ultra-individualist utterly devoted to the collective effort. He believes in the team over the individual, in always having a plan and a team prepared to follow it. Van Gaal led the young Ajax team he moulded to Champions League glory in 1995, went on to win titles across Europe with Barcelona, AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich and served two stints as national coach of Holland. It is a career that has never been short on colour and drama - from fallouts with players to rants at the media wherever he has managed. Dutch football commentator Maarten Meijer's has written the definitive biography of van Gaal - both the man and his methods. It offers the best psychological insight so far - from his earliest roots to his greatest triumphs - into the man given the task of returning the glory days to Manchester United. It also includes new chapter on Louis van Gaal's first season with Manchester United.

Messy
The urge to tidiness seems to be rooted deep in the human psyche. Many of us feel threatened by anything that is vague, unplanned, scattered around or hard to describe. We find comfort in having a script to rely on, a system to follow, in being able to categorise and file away. We all benefit from tidy organisation - up to a point. A large library needs a reference system. Global trade needs the shipping container. Scientific collaboration needs measurement units. But the forces of tidiness have marched too far. Corporate middle managers and government bureaucrats have long tended to insist that everything must have a label, a number and a logical place in a logical system. Now that they are armed with computers and serial numbers, there is little to hold this tidy-mindedness in check. It's even spilling into our personal lives, as we corral our children into sanitised play areas or entrust our quest for love to the soulless algorithms of dating websites. Order is imposed when chaos would be more productive. Or if not chaos, then ...messiness. The trouble with tidiness is that, in excess, it becomes rigid, fragile and sterile. In Messy, Tim Harford reveals how qualities we value more than ever - responsiveness, resilience and creativity - simply cannot be disentangled from the messy soil that produces them. This, then, is a book about the benefits of being messy: messy in our private lives; messy in the office, with piles of paper on the desk and unread spreadsheets; messy in the recording studio, the laboratory or in preparing for an important presentation; and messy in our approach to business, politics and economics, leaving things vague, diverse and uncomfortably made-up-on-the-spot. It's time to rediscover the benefits of a little mess.

Decisive
Just making a decision can be hard enough, but how do you begin to judge whether it's the right one? Chip and Dan Heath, authors of number 1 New York Times best-seller Switch, show you how to overcome your brain's natural shortcomings. In Decisive, Chip and Dan Heath draw on decades of psychological research to explain why we so often get it very badly wrong - why our supposedly rational brains are frequently tripped up by powerful biases and wishful thinking. At the same time they demonstrate how relatively easy it is to avoid the pitfalls and find the best answers, offering four simple principles that we can all learn and follow. In the process, they show why it is that experts frequently make mistakes. They demonstrate the perils of getting trapped in a narrow decision frame. And they explore people's tendency to be over-confident about how their choices will unfold. Drawing on case studies as diverse as the downfall of Kodak and the inspiring account of a cancer survivor, they offer both a fascinating tour through the workings of our minds and an invaluable guide to making smarter decisions. It is the winner in the Practical Manager category of the CMI Management Book of the Year awards 2014.

How Google Works
Both Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg came to Google as seasoned Silicon Valley business executives, but over the course of a decade they came to see the wisdom in Coach John Wooden's observation that 'it's what you learn after you know it all that counts'. As they helped grow Google from a young start-up to a global icon, they relearned everything they knew about management. How Google Works is the sum of those experiences distilled into a fun, easy-to-read primer on corporate culture, strategy, talent, decision-making, communication, innovation, and dealing with disruption. The authors explain how the confluence of three seismic changes - the internet, mobile, and cloud computing - has shifted the balance of power from companies to consumers. The companies that will thrive in this ever-changing landscape will be the ones that create superior products and attract a new breed of multifaceted employees whom the authors dub 'smart creatives'. The management maxims ('Consensus requires dissension', 'Exile knaves but fight for divas', 'Think 10X, not 10%') are illustrated with previously unreported anecdotes from Google's corporate history. 'Back in 2010, Eric and I created an internal class for Google managers,' says Rosenberg. 'The class slides all read 'Google confidential' until an employee suggested we uphold the spirit of openness and share them with the world. This book codifies the recipe for our secret sauce: how Google innovates and how it empowers employees to succeed.'
