Light in the darkness
Emily Carter was an ordinary girl with ordinary problems. She lived in London with her foster mother, who adopted her when her father died. To be exact, when he committed suicide. At least that's what everyone said, but Emily always doubted it. It's been years since then, but she's never forgotten her father. But when the day finally came and she became part of the adult world, a huge change happened in her life, one that she hadn't expected. A new world opened up to her, a world she had never known before: angels and demons appeared to her. And she turned out to be a Seer. Moreover, her father had left her with an important task, that only she could perform. But first, she had to overcome a series of obstacles, starting with the demons and their leader, whose main goal was to prevent her from succeeding. Fortunately, she had the help of her newfound guardian angel Jack and an unexpected ally in the form of a demon. Could they succeed in their quest? Can the girl finish what her father started and retrieve the object her father believed was the key to victory?

Rozmazlená princezna
Penn
A to zatraceně rychle.
Daria
Chovala jsem se jako mrcha. To přiznávám. Trousila jsem jedovaté komentáře, opovržlivě ohrnovala nos a nastavovala nohy svým protivníkům.
Zašlapávala jsem jehlovými podpatky do země každého, kdo by mi mohl ublížit.
Třeba Pennyho Scullyho. Probodla jsem mu srdce, nechala ho vykrvácet a pak ho vyhodila do odpaďáku.

Islamic Art and Architecture
Embracing over a thousand years of history and an area stretching from the Atlantic to the borders of India and China, this is an unrivalled synthesis of the arts of Islamic civilization. From the death of the Prophet Muhammad to the present day, Robert Hillenbrand traces the evolution of an extraordinary range of art forms, including architecture, calligraphy, book illumination, painting, ceramics, glassware, textiles and metalwork. New to this edition is a chapter ranging from c. 1700 to c. 1900, a period very often neglected in books on this subject. Hillenbrand explores how recent centuries, far from being a dark age, have seen incredible artistic ferment and creativity across the Islamic world. Full-colour illustrations of masterpieces of Islamic art and architecture - from Moorish Spain to contemporary Iran - show the far-reaching stylistic developments as well as the recurrent preoccupations that have shaped the arts of Islam since the seventh century.

A World Apart and Other Stories
Kniha překladatelky Kathleen Hayes přibližuje čtenáři vůbec první anglické překlady povídek doposud neprávem spíše opomíjených českých autorek přelomu 19. a 20. století. Zdařilost výběru povídek je podpořena precizním a čtivým překladem povídek Boženy Benešové, Růženy Jesenské, Marie Majerové a dalších. Kniha je doplněna životopisy všech osmi autorek.
“It grew dark and a mist spread over the countryside like a curtain. We were at the Bohemian border. Customs control, shouting, the din of the station, and finally the train moved on with a monotonous drone.
‘It was right here that I met Teresa Elinson,’ Marta said, in the corner of the cozy compartment.
I replied: ‘Who is Teresa Elinson? I don’t remember you ever mentioning her.’
‘No, never. It was a kind of adventure. That time too the train hurtled into the dark, where red sparks flew and lights flashed, scattering in the mist...’”
Thus begins the story by Růžena Jesenská that gives this book its name. In this anthology, Kathleen Hayes has selected and translated eight stories by Czech female authors at the turn of the 19th and 20th century: a period of female political emancipation and impressive literary development. All of the writers included in the present volume were recognized in their own day and constitute a cross-section of the literary styles of the period. Tilschová’s “A Sad Time” is written in a Naturalist style; Jesenská’s “A World Apart” presents themes and motifs that appealed to the Decadents. Malířová’s “The Sylph” is both diaristic and satirical, while Svobodová’s ironical “A Great Passion”, with its rural setting and folklore motifs, reminds one of the writings of Karel Jaromír Erben. Preissová’s short story may be read as a celebration of folk culture. Benešová’s “Friends” is interesting for its psychological presentation of a child’s point of view and its implicit criticism of anti-Semitism.
The book is accompanied by the biographies of each author and an introduction by Kathleen Hayes.

A Pipeline Runs Through It
Petroleum has always been used by humans: as an adhesive by Neanderthals, as a waterproofing agent in Noah's Ark and as a weapon during the Crusades. Its eventual extraction from the earth in vast quantities transformed light, heat and power. A Pipeline Runs Through It is a fresh, comprehensive in-depth look at the social, economic, political and geopolitical forces involved in our transition to the modern oil age. It tells an extraordinary origin story, from the pre-industrial history of petroleum through to large-scale production in the mid-nineteenth century and the development of a dominant, fully-fledged oil industry by the early twentieth century.
This was always a story of imperialist violence, political disenfranchisement, economic exploitation and environmental destruction. The near total eradication of the Native Americans of New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio has barely been mentioned as a precondition for the emergence of the first industrialised oil region in the United States. Britain's invasion of Upper Burma in 1885 was perhaps the first war fought, at least in part, for access to oil; the growth of Royal Dutch-Shell involved the genocidal subjugation of people of the Dutch East Indies and the exploitation of oil in the Middle East arose seamlessly out of Britain's prior political and military interventions in the region.
Finally, in an entirely new analysis, the book shows how the British navy's increasingly desperate dependence on vulnerable foreign sources of oil may have been a catalytic ingredient in the outbreak of the First World War. The rise of oil has shaped the modern world, and this is the book to understand it.

The Story of Flowers
Throughout history flowers have been an integral part of human survival and culture - as food, for medicine, to express feelings, as symbols, to commemorate and celebrate, and to decorate. Their shapes, colours, scents and textures have always attracted us, as they do animals and insects. Flowers are used as luxury spices (saffron), and as colouring and flavouring agents - marigolds fed to chickens make eggs more yellow and lavender was Elizabeth I's favourite flavour of jam.
Flowers are full of symbolic meaning: violets represent modesty, daises purity and daffodils unrequited love. And they have always played an important role in culture through myths and legends, literature and the decorative arts. This delightful new book brings together 100 of the world's flowers to tell their remarkable stories.
Each flower is richly illustrated in colour and accompanied by facts about each species and what role it has played in our culture and history.

Out There Screaming
Jordan Peele, the visionary writer and director of Get Out, Us and Nope, and founder of Monkeypaw Productions, curates this groundbreaking anthology of brand new stories of Black horror, exploring not only the terrors of the supernatural but also the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our world.
Featuring an introduction by Jordan Peele and an all-star roster of beloved writers and new voices, Out There Screaming is a masterclass in horror, and – like his spine-chilling films – its stories prey on everything we think we know about our world, and redefine what it means to be afraid. Very afraid . . .
A cop begins seeing huge, blinking eyes in place of the headlights of cars that tell him who to pull over. Two freedom riders take a bus that leaves them stranded on a lonely road in Alabama, where several unsettling somethings await them. A young girl dives into the watery depths in search of the demon that killed her parents. Here you'll find monster-hunters fighting monsters, humanoid AIs fighting for their rights, and an Igbo woman standing up to a powerful spirit. These are just a few of the worlds of Out There Screaming, Jordan Peele’s anthology of all-new horror stories by Black writers.
