In this unique, humorous little book, modern maki (sushi roll) artist and instructor Tama-chan, otherwise known as Takayo Kiyota, shows how familiar ingredients like rice, seaweed, pickles, and cucumber can be used like paint and ink to create maki that is so fun to look at, you almost won't want to eat it. Images of Time - Mind, Science, Reality
Have you ever wondered about Time: what it is or how to discuss it? If you have, then you may have been bewildered by the many different views and opinions in many diverse fields to be found, such as physics, mathematics, philosophy, religion, history, and science fiction novels and films. This book will help you unravel fact from fiction. It provides a broad survey of many of these views, these images of time, covering historical, cultural, philosophical,
biological, mathematical and physical images of time, including classical and quantum mechanics, special and general relativity and cosmology.
This book gives you more than just a review of such images. It provides the reader a basis for judging the scientific soundness of these various images. It develops the reader's critical ability to distinguish Images of Time in terms of its contextual completeness. Differentiating between metaphysical images (which cannot be scientifically validated) and those that could, in principle, be put to empirical test. Showing that mathematical and classical mechanical images are more complete, and
genuine quantum mechanics based images have the greatest degree of contextual completeness. Through the use of a simple algorithm, the reader can decide the classification of any of the images of time discussed in this book. These distinctions are of particular importance in this day and age, when we
are flooded by a plethora of competing Images of Time. Many of these have no scientific basis or empirical support or content. This book will be of value not only to philosophers, scientists and students, but also to the general reader interested in this fundamental topic, because it introduces a method of distinguishing between science fiction and science fact.

O'Keeffe
Mighty nature: The pioneering forms of Georgia O KeeffeGeorgia O Keeffe (1887 1986) was a major figure in modern American art for some seven decades. Importantly, her fame was not associated with shifting art styles and trends, but rather with her own unique vision, based on finding essential and abstract forms in nature.O Keeffe s primary subjects were landscapes, flowers, and bones, each explored in successive series over several years. Certain works went on for decades, producing 12 or more variations of an original image. Among these, O Keeffe s magnified pictures of calla lilies and irises are her most famous. Enlarging the tiniest petals to fill an entire canvas, O Keeffe created a proto-abstract vocabulary of shapes and lines, earning her the moniker mother of American modernism. In 1946, O Keeffe became the first female artist to be given a solo show at the MoMA in New York. This introductory book from TASCHEN Basic Art 2.0 traces O Keeffe s long and luminous career through key paintings, contemporary photographs, and portraits taken by Alfred Stieglitz, to whom O Keeffe was married. We follow the artist through her pioneering innovations, major breakthroughs, and her travels and inspirations in Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and, above all, New Mexico, where she was particularly inspired by the majestic landscapes, vivid colors and exotic vegetation.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"
Why You Can Go Out Dressed Like That
Numerous designers have pioneered cutting-edge garments and collections throughout the evolution of fashion. But all too often a lack of obvious fit or purpose has been mistaken for a lack of design sophistication. In an informed defence of innovative fashion, Why You Can Go Out Dressed Like That champions the improbable, the provocative, the uncomfortable and the seemingly ridiculous. Inspired by diverse sources, theories and concepts, as well as futuristic textiles and techniques, the book explores the groundbreaking work of designers who strive to extend the boundaries of their creativity. There are no fixed elements to the 100 designs featured in this book, which range from the cerebral conceptions of Comme des Garcons, to the augmented anatomies of Thierry Mugler and the exaggerated physicality of Thom Brownes broad-shouldered men. The garments do not have to fulfil a function, keep you warm, or increase sexual attraction, nor do they have to beguile or disarm. They do need to have impact at the time of creation and to prove influential in the longer term. Many original designs elicit the response: You cant go out dressed like that! Marnie Fogg proves decisively that modern fashion is not as outrageous and unwearable as it may seem.

Richard Kern - New York Girls, 20th Anniversary
Escape To New York: Revisit those edgy, NY girls of the early 90s New York Girls, published by TASCHEN Books in 1995, defined a time, a place, and the raw esthetic of the artist Richard Kern. Kern was a leading figure in the 1980s Cinema of Transgression, director of the iconic filmsYou Killed Me First, FingeredandSubmit to Me Now; producer of Sonic Youth s Death Valley 69 and Marilyn Manson sLunchboxmusic videos; and a pioneering zine publisher responsible forThe Heroin Addictand The Valium Addict. After kicking his own heroin habit, Kern turned to still photography, shooting girls in his downtown, punk-inflected New York social circle. They werenaked, bold, tattooed, pierced, and casually posedin minimal sets, mostly just Richard s ratty slum apartment. They were young, but not innocent, fully complicit in the bondage, gunplay, and infamous candle insertions. The text was an interview with Kern by Kim Gordon. All of this predated SuicideGirls by six years and was utterly, supremely cool.To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kern s best-known work, TASCHEN is releasing an updated edition withnever-published outtakes from the original photo sets, as well as photos rejected as too explicit for the first book and stills from his 25 films. We know you ve missed Monica, Erin, Jaiko, Jen, Susan, Amy and Sam, and thought you d enjoy seeing just a bit more of them. Text in English, French, and German "

The Classic Works of D. H. Lawrence
D.H. Lawrence is one of the greatest English novelists of the 20th century. He gained literary fame for his novels and poems which took a vigorous, new attitude towards personal relationships. The passion, intensity and honesty of Lawrence's best work will ensure his popularity and critical reputation long after the scandal surrounding Lady Chatterley's Lover has been forgotten. Sons and Lovers, Lawrence's first important novel, examines the emotional conflict in an ambitious young painter as he struggles to escape his mining background and is caught between intense devotion to his mother and a newly-aroused passion for two dissimilar women. Lawrence considered Women in Love his best novel, the story of the loves of two sisters Gudrun and Ursula charts a course of tempestuous passions descending, inevitably, into tragedy. Love Among the Haystacks is the short but powerful tale of rivalry between two brothers whose emotional confusion finds resolution one summer night after the Nottingham harvest. Lady Chatterley's Lover is perhaps the most notorious novel ever written. This story of a passionate love affair between an aristocratic lady and her crippled husband's gamekeeper was banned when it first appeared and the unexpurgated text published here was suppressed for a further thirty-two years.

The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World
"THE ULTIMATE DINOSAUR BIOGRAPHY," hails Scientific American: A sweeping and revelatory new history of the age of dinosaurs, from one of our finest young scientists.
"This is scientific storytelling at its most visceral, striding with the beasts through their Triassic dawn, Jurassic dominance, and abrupt demise in the Cretaceous." - Nature
The dinosaurs. Sixty-six million years ago, the Earth's most fearsome creatures vanished. Today they remain one of our planet's great mysteries. Now The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs reveals their extraordinary, 200-million-year-long story as never before.
In this captivating narrative (enlivened with more than seventy original illustrations and photographs), Steve Brusatte, a young American paleontologist who has emerged as one of the foremost stars of the field-naming fifteen new species and leading groundbreaking scientific studies and fieldwork-masterfully tells the complete, surprising, and new history of the dinosaurs, drawing on cutting-edge science to dramatically bring to life their lost world and illuminate their enigmatic origins, spectacular flourishing, astonishing diversity, cataclysmic extinction, and startling living legacy. Captivating and revelatory, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs is a book for the ages.
Brusatte traces the evolution of dinosaurs from their inauspicious start as small shadow dwellers-themselves the beneficiaries of a mass extinction caused by volcanic eruptions at the beginning of the Triassic period-into the dominant array of species every wide-eyed child memorizes today, T. rex, Triceratops, Brontosaurus, and more. This gifted scientist and writer re-creates the dinosaurs' peak during the Jurassic and Cretaceous, when thousands of species thrived, and winged and feathered dinosaurs, the prehistoric ancestors of modern birds, emerged. The story continues to the end of the Cretaceous period, when a giant asteroid or comet struck the planet and nearly every dinosaur species (but not all) died out, in the most extraordinary extinction event in earth's history, one full of lessons for today as we confront a "sixth extinction."
Brusatte also recalls compelling stories from his globe-trotting expeditions during one of the most exciting eras in dinosaur research-which he calls "a new golden age of discovery"-and offers thrilling accounts of some of the remarkable findings he and his colleagues have made, including primitive human-sized tyrannosaurs; monstrous carnivores even larger than T. rex; and paradigm-shifting feathered raptors from China.
An electrifying scientific history that unearths the dinosaurs' epic saga, The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs will be a definitive and treasured account for decades to come.

Castro and Cuba, Lockwood
The real Fidel This is a telling portrait of Cuba and its enigmatic leader. In December of 1958, Lee Lockwood, then a young photojournalist, went to Cuba to cover what looked to be the end of Batista's regime. He arrived the day before Fidel Castro took power and spent a week canvassing the island before finally coming into contact with his subject. In the following decade, Lockwood returned to Cuba a dozen times. Early on Castro began to trust him as a fair-minded and balanced reporter, and granted him access not just to photograph him, but also to conduct a marathon seven-day interview in 1965 that remains to this day one of the most penetrating portraits of the Cuban leader. The interview, together with Lockwood's own writings and photographs, were published in the 1967 book "Castro's Cuba, Cuba's Fidel", a book so radical in its message, that Franco banned it in Spain. This new edition, which brings that long out-of-print book back to life, features a large number of never-before-published color photographs, including intimate scenes from the weeks Lockwood spent travelling with Castro, from military encampments in the Sierra Maestra Mountains to the Jefe's compound on the Isle of Pines. TASCHEN's new edition also includes expanded coverage of Cuba in the '60s - people at work in fields and factories, at play in Havana's dance halls and streets, and at political rallies and marches. Also included is an audio CD with excerpts from the Castro-Lockwood interviews, edited from the original reel-to-reel recordings.
Legion
Brandon Sanderson is one of the most significant fantasists to enter the field in a good many years. His ambitious, multi-volume epics and his stellar continuation of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series have earned both critical acclaim and a substantial popular following. In LEGION, a distinctly contemporary novella filled with suspense, humor, and an endless flow of invention, Sanderson reveals a startling new facet of his singular narrative talent. Stephen Leeds, AKA 'Legion', is a man whose unique mental condition allows him to generate a multitude of personae: hallucinatory entities with a wide variety of personal characteristics and a vast array of highly specialised skills. As the story begins, Leeds and his 'aspects' are drawn into the search for the missing Balubal Razon, inventor of a camera whose astonishing properties could alter our understanding of human history and change the very structure of society. The action ranges from the familiar environs of America to the ancient, divided city of Jerusalem. Along the way, Sanderson touches on a formidable assortment of complex questions: the nature of time, the mysteries of the human mind, the potential uses of technology, and the volatile connection between politics and faith. Resonant, intelligent, and thoroughly absorbing, LEGION is a provocative entertainment from a writer of great originality and seemingly limitless gifts.

Contest of the Century
By sea and on the airwaves, by dollar and yuan, a contest has begun that will shape the next century. China's rise has now entered a critical new phase, as it begins to translate its considerable economic heft into a bigger role on the world stage, challenging America's recent supremacy. With its new navy, China is trying to ease the US out of Asia and re-assert its traditional leadership in the region. Beijing plans to turn the renminbi into the main international currency, toppling the dominance of the US dollar. And by investing billions to send its media companies overseas, it aims to contest Western values and shift the global debate about democracy and human rights. If globalisation has been the driving force of the past few decades, Geoff Dyer argues that a more traditional great power-style competition between the US and China will dominate this century. Yet he also shows why China may struggle to unseat the West - its ambitious designs are provoking intense anxiety, especially in Asia, while America's global alliances have deep roots. If Washington can adjust to a world in which it is no longer the sole dominant power, it may be able to retain its ability to set the global agenda in the face of China's challenge.

Art Deco
The Art Deco style is so recognisable and widespread that its original influence on the culture in which it emerged has been all but lost in the clutter of imitation. This book draws our attention back to the birth of Art Deco - a period between two devastating world wars when industrialization was flourishing, interest in archaeology was peaking, and movements such as Cubism, Constructivism, Futurism, and Modernism were turning the art world on its head. Brilliantly designed to reflect the style it celebrates, Art Deco is filled with hundreds of examples of painting, architecture, interiors, jewellery, crafts, furniture, and fashion. Author Norbert Wolf traces the chronology of the Art Deco style by looking at the politics and culture of Europe in the 1920s and early 30s, and the artistic movements that paralleled its popularity. He follows Art Deco's influence in Europe, and its immigration to the Americas and Asia. Most importantly, this wide-ranging volume looks beyond the era of Art Deco's origination to the present day. Pointing to the numerous revivals and contemporary echoes in painting and even literature, this beautiful volume demonstrates that Art Deco is alive and well today - often in forms where we least expect it.

Fractured Times
Born almost a hundred years ago in Vienna - the cultural heart of a bourgeois Mitteleurope - Eric Hobsbawm, who was to become one of the most brilliant and original historians of our age, was uniquely placed to observe an era of titanic social and artistic change. As the century progressed, the forces of Communism and Dadaism, Ibiza and cyberspace, would do battle with the bourgeois high culture fin-de-siecle Vienna represented - the opera, the Burgtheater, the museums of art and science, City Hall. In Fractured Times Hobsbawm unpicks a century of cultural fragmentation and dissolution with characteristic verve and vigour.
Hobsbawm examines the conditions that created the great cultural flowering of the belle époque and held the seeds of its disintegration, from paternalistic capitalism to globalisation and the arrival of a mass consumer society. Passionate but never sentimental, Hobsbawm ranges freely across his subject: he records the passing of the golden age of the 'free intellectual' and examines the lives of great, forgotten men; he analyses the relation between art and totalitarianism and dissects cultural phenomena as diverse as surrealism, women's emancipation and the American cowboy myth.
Written with consummate imagination and skill, Fractured Times is the last book from one of our greatest modern-day thinkers.
