Remembrance of Things Past: Volume 2
One of the greatest translations of all time: Scott Moncrieff's classic version of Proust, published in three volumes
Proust's masterpiece is one of the seminal works of the twentieth century, recording its narrator's experiences as he grows up, falls in love and lives through the First World War. A profound reflection on art, time, memory, self and loss, it is often viewed as the definitive modern novel. C. K. Scott Moncrieff's famous translation from the 1920s is today regarded as a classic in its own right and is now available in three volumes in Penguin Classics.
This second volume includes The Guermantes Way and Cities of the Plain.

War and Peace
War looms in Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, and when Napoleon invades Russia in 1812 it forever changes those whose lives it engulfs. Although told on a panoramic scale Tolstoy's epic novel focuses the chaos of battle, the horror of death and bloodshed, and the expression of the noble virtues of love and valor through their impact on the lives of three principal characters: the courageous Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, the idealistic Pierre Bezukhov, and the nobly born beauty Natasha Rostov.
Witcher 1 Grain Of Truth
Geralt's encounter with a beast reveals the truth behind fairy tales in this graphic novel adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's original short story.
Geralt takes a short cut down a beaten path, where he makes a grim discovery of two corpses. Backtracking their trail, he's led to a derelict mansion secured with elevated walls and a gate--mysterious and ramshackle, yet adorned with a rare elegance Geralt could not ignore. He is met with the mansion's owner--not quite human, but a beast with the faculties of a man. With Geralt unfazed by his monstrous appearance and displays of aggression, the beast invites him inside. A kind but wary host, he shares stories of his family, his life . . . and his curse. If the weight of his misdeeds could condemn him to the body of a beast--a retribution spoken of only in fairy tales, could there be another grain of truth in these tales of fantasy--one that could help him elude his fate and lead him to salvation?
This graphic novel is the first in a series of adaptations from Sapkowski's acclaimed short story collection The Last Wish! Script adaptation by Jacek Rembiś (Frostpunk) with art by Jonas Scharf (Bone Parish, War for the Planet of the Apes).

The Dawn of Everything
For generations, our remote ancestors have been cast as primitive and childlike - either free and equal, or thuggish and warlike. Civilization, we are told, could be achieved only by sacrificing those original freedoms or, alternatively, by taming our baser instincts. David Graeber and David Wengrow show how such theories first emerged in the eighteenth century as a reaction to indigenous critiques of European society, and why they are wrong. In doing so, they overturn our view of human history, including the origins of farming, property, cities, democracy, slavery and civilization itself.
Drawing on path-breaking research in archaeology and anthropology, the authors show how history becomes a far more interesting place once we begin to see what's really there. If humans did not spend 95 per cent of their evolutionary past in tiny bands of hunter-gatherers, what were they doing all that time? If agriculture, and cities, did not mean a plunge into hierarchy and domination, then what kinds of social and economic organization did they lead to? The answers are often unexpected, and suggest that the course of history may be less set in stone, and more full of playful possibilities than we tend to assume.
The Dawn of Everything fundamentally transforms our understanding of the human past and offers a path toward imagining new forms of freedom, new ways of organizing society. This is a monumental book of formidable intellectual range, animated by curiosity, moral vision and faith in the power of direct action.

The struggle for Slovakia and the Treaty of Trianon 1918-1920
Monografia je upraveným a doplneným vydaním slovenskej publikácie Boj o Slovensko a Trianon 1918 – 1920. V porovnaní so slovenskou verziou má koncepčnú úpravu s väčším dôrazom na vedecký charakter práce súvisiaci so širšou pramennou bázou a celkovým heuristickým charakterom.

Like Life - Sculpture, Color, and the Body
Explores how artists from the European Renaissance to the global present have used sculpture and color to evoke the presence of the living body
Since the earliest myths of the sculptor Pygmalion bringing a statue to life through desire, artists have explored the boundaries between sculpture and the physical materiality of the body. This groundbreaking volume examines key sculptural works from 13th-century Europe to the global present, revealing new insights into the strategies artists deploy to blur the distinction between art and life. Sculpture, which has historically taken the human figure as its subject, is presented here in myriad manifestations created by artists ranging from Donatello and Degas to Picasso, Kiki Smith, and Jeff Koons. Featuring works created in traditional media such as wood and marble as well as the unexpected such as wax, metal, and blood, Like Life presents sculpture both conventional and shocking, including effigies, dolls, mannequins, automata, waxworks, and anatomical models. Containing texts by art and cultural historians as well as interviews with contemporary artists, this is a provocative exploration of three-dimensional representations of the human body.

Probabilistic Reliability Assessment of Existing Structures
Efektivní postup poskytují pravděpodobnostní metody, které umožňují věrohodně popsat nejistoty a uvážit výsledky pozorování i zkušenosti s uspokojivým předchozím působením konstrukce. Klíčové kroky pravděpodobnostního hodnocení existujících konstrukcí zahrnují aktualizaci pravděpodobnostních modelů základních veličin a pravděpodobnosti poruchy a optimalizaci směrných úrovní spolehlivosti. Cílová skupina čtenářů zahrnuje vědecké pracovníky, projektanty i vysokoškolské studenty.

A History of the Roman Empire in 21 Women
Here's how the history of the Roman Empire usually goes... We start with Romulus, go on to Brutus overthrowing Tarquin, bounce through an appallingly tedious list of battles and generals and consuls, before emerging into the political stab-fest of the late Republic. From there, it runs through all the emperors, occasionally mentioning a wife or mother to show how bad things get when women get out of control, until Constantine invents Christianity and then Attila the Hun comes and ruins everything.
But the history of Rome and empire is so much more than these Important Things. In this alternative history, Emma Southon traces the story of the Roman Empire through women: Vestal Virgins and sex workers, business owners and poets, martyrs and saints. Each gives a different perspective on women's lives and how they changed, across time and across class lines.
People, Power, and Profits
We all have the sense that our economy tilts toward big business, but, as Joseph E. Stiglitz explains in People, Power, and Profits, a few corporations now dominate entire sectors, contributing to skyrocketing inequality and slow growth. This is how the financial industry has managed to write its own regulations, tech companies have accumulated reams of personal data without oversight, and the government has negotiated trade deals that fail to represent the interests of workers.
Too many have made their wealth through exploitation of others rather than through wealth creation. New technologies may make matters worse, increasing inequality and unemployment. Stiglitz identifies the true sources of wealth and of increases in standards of living, based on learning, advances in science and technology, and the rule of law.
He shows that the assault on the judiciary, universities, and the media undermines the very institutions that have long been the foundation of economic prosperity and democracy. He sets out the economic solutions which will exploit the benefits of markets while taming their excesses, and how a decent middle-class life can once again be attainable for all.
