Commons in Design
How social cooperation within communities can better the impact of functional, sustainable design
The scarcity of resources, climate change and the digitalization of everyday life are fuelling the economy of swapping, sharing and lending: all of which are in some way linked to a culture of commoning. In this context, commons can be understood as community-based processes that use, collectively manage and organize generally accessible resources, either goods or knowledge.
Commons in Design explores the meaning and impact of commons?especially knowledge-based peer commons?and acts of commoning in design. It discusses networked, participatory and open procedures based on the commons and commoning, testing models that negotiate the use of commons within design processes. In doing so, it critically engages with questions regarding designers’ positionings, everyday practices, self-understandings, ways of working and approaches to education.
Contributors include: Rachel Armstrong, Max Stearns, Nathalie Attallah, Yuhe Ge, Juan Gomez, Luis Guerra, Katherin Gutiérrez Herrera, Cyrus Khalatbari, Rilla Khaled, Cindy Kohtala, Torange Khonsari, Álvaro Mercado Jara, Nan O’Sullivan, Victoria Paeva, Sharon Prendeville, Zoe Romano, Gregoire Rousseau, Daniela Salgado Cofré, Elpitha Tsoutsounakis, Eva Verhoeven, Jennifer Whitty.

Social Design
Social design is design for society and with society. As social innovation and on the basis of dialogue and participation, social design strives for a new networking of the individual, civil society, government, and the economy. Social design is thus a response to a global growth economyand its consequences for humans and the environment: The means of production and resources are becoming scarcer, setting off discussions about the need to redesign social systems and living and working environments.
Architects and designers have always played a vital role in shaping this social culture. Social Design thus presents a long-overdue survey of current international positions of interdisciplinary breadth, ranging from new infrastructures to the re-conquest of cities by their inhabitants. Some twenty-seven projects in the areas of cityscape and countryside, housing, education and work, production, migration, networks, and the environment are framed by three research studies that trace the historical roots and foundations of social design and look at today's theoretical discourse as well as future trends.

The Wedding Dress
The story of a family and a special dress, handed down from mother to daughter, during times of fortune, loss, tragedy and victory, by the world's favourite storyteller, Danielle Steel.
The Deveraux family were among the most important members of 1920s San Francisco society, and the wedding of their daughter Eleanor to wealthy banker Alexander Allen would be the highlight of the 1929 social calendar. The wedding, held in the family's magnificent Pacific Heights mansion, was everything they'd hoped, and Eleanor's dress was a triumph. Designed by one of the most famous fashion houses in Paris, it was exquisite in every way. But the dream life, along with the most perfect honeymoon in Europe, was about to come to an end when Alex received news of the Wall Street Crash. It appeared that the family had lost everything . . .
In the years that followed, the Deveraux lived through periods of huge social and political change. What helped to unite them was the beautiful wedding dress, first worn by Eleanor, which remained a family heirloom and continued to hold a special place in the hearts of a family desperate to survive the turmoil and changing fortunes of the times.

Dance, Gender, and Meanings
The Proceedings include contributions from the 26th Symposium of the ICTM Study group on Ethnochoreology. These texts deal with two themes: 1. Dance, Gender, and Meaning, 2. Contemporizing Traditional Dance. They bring various points of view, examples and conceptual frames for understanding dance in connection with these two topics. The authors are researchers from all around the world, looking at dance from many perspectives, but with the common theoretical background, formed by the ethnochoreology, ethnology and dance anthropology. Seven papers on the theme one bring the understanding of the relationship between the gender, dance and its meaning in connection with the issues of identity, socialization, teaching process, femininity and masculinity etc. Fifteen contributions and three panels are related to the theme two. The phenomenon of contemporizing traditional dance is explored from the perspective of identity, tasks of safeguarding the heritage and preservation, various social contexts, relations between the traditional dance and theatre, authenticity, politics, aesthetic and cultural values, commodification. The texts are accompanied by photos.
OWC Cyrano de Bergerac
`Tonight When I make my sweeping bow at heaven's gate, One thing I shall still possess, at any rate, Unscathed, something outlasting mortal flesh, And that is ... My panache.' The first English translation of Cyrano de Bergerac, in 1898, introduced t
he word panache into the English language. This single word summed up Rostand's rejection of the social realism which dominated late nineteenth-century theatre. He wrote his `heroic comedy', unfashionably, in verse, and set it in the reign of Louis X
III and the Three Musketeers. Based on the life of a little known writer, Rostand's hero has become a figure of theatrical legend: Cyrano, with the nose of a clown and the soul of a poet, is by turns comic and sad, as reckless in love as in war, and
never at a loss for words. Audiences immediately took him to their hearts, and since the triumphant opening night in December 1897 - at the height of the Dreyfus Affair - the play has never lost its appeal. The text is accompanied by notes and a full
introduction which sets the play in its literary and historical context. Christopher Fry's acclaimed translation into `chiming couplets' represents the homage of one verse dramatist to another.

Under the Dome
There's a reason why Stephen King is one of the best selling writers in the world ever.
He knows how to write stories that suck you in and are impossible to put down. The New York Times describes it as a 'relentless tidal pull' and Stephen King has done it time and time again with stories like The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, The Green Mile and The Stand.
In Under the Dome, he has produced another riveting masterpiece. The end of every chapter hooks you into the next, drawing you inside a psychological drama that is so rich, you don't read it, you live it.
It is the story of the small town of Chester's Mill, Maine which is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. No one can get in and no one can get out.
The normal rules of society are suddenly changed and when food, electricity and water run short, the community begins to crumble. As a new and more sinister social order develops, Dale Barbara, Iraq veteran, teams up with a handful of intrepid citizens to fight against the corruption that is sweeping through the town and to try to discover the source of the Dome before it is too late . . .

Recollections
Philip Jones Griffiths is renowned as the foremost photographer of the war in Viet Nam. President of Magnum for a record five years, his 1971 publication Viet Nam Inc was a crucial influence in changing public opinion in the US at the time of he conflict. This new book however presents a period much closer to home, with a departure towards many previously unseen images taken of Britain in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Griffiths' images depict social and political affairs and landmark events over three decades of change and upheaval in Great Britain. From the Beatles in Liverpool and coalminers in Wales, to CND marches on the streets of London and funeral processions in Northern Ireland, the images are acute, human, and often wry, moments describing an important transition in British society. "Middle Years" presents a domestic revolution, from a photographer whose international fame covering a country on the other side of the world is now put in the context of his equally incisive work at home. An exhibition of over 50 images from the book was exhibited in 2007 at Trolley Gallery, London and afterwards at Savignano Festival, Italy. In 2008, the images will be exhibited in Liverpool, England, as part of their "City of Culture" celebrations.

The luminous life of Lilly Ap
As the clock chimed the turn of the twentieth century, Lilly Nelly Aphrodite took her first breath. Born to a cabaret dancer and soon orphaned in a scandalous double murder, Lilly finds refuge at a Catholic orphanage, coming under the wing of the, at times, severe Sister August, the first in a string of lost loves.
There she meets Hanne Schmidt, a teen prostitute, and forms a bond that will last them through tumultuous love affairs, disastrous marriages, and destitution during the First World War and the subsequent economic collapse. As the century progresses, Lilly and Hanne move from the tawdry glamour of the tingle-tangle nightclubs to the shadow world of health films before Lilly finds success and stardom in the new medium of motion pictures and ultimately falls in love with a man whose fate could cost her everything she has worked for or help her discover her true self.
Gripping and darkly seductive, The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite showcases all the glitter and splendor of the brief heyday of the Weimar Republic, and the rise of Hollywood to its golden age. As it foreshadows the horrors of the Second World War, the novel asks what price is paid when identity becomes unfixed and the social order is upended.

OWC Queen of Spades and Other Stories
The Queen of Spades has long been acknowledged as one of the world's greatest short stories. In this classic literary representation of gambling, Alexander Pushkin explores the nature of obsession. Hints of the occult and gothic alternate with scenes
of St Petersburg high-society in the story of the passionate Hermann's quest to master chance and make his fortune at the card-table. Underlying the taut plot is an ironical treatment of the romantic dreamer and social outcast. This volume contains
three other major works of Pushkin's fiction, moving from the witty parodies of sentimentalism and high melodrama in The Tales of Belkin to an early experiment with recreating the past in Peter the Great's Blackamoor. It concludes with the novel-leng
th masterpiece The Captain's Daughter, which combines historical fiction in the manner of Sir Walter Scott with the colour and devices of the Russian fairy-tale in a narrative of rebellion and romance. These new translations, as well as being meticul
ously faithful to the original, do full justice to the elegance and fluency of Pushkin's prose. The Introduction provides insightful readings of the stories and places them in their European literary context. A chronology of the Pugachov Uprising ill
uminates the events in The Captain's Daughter.

Hasselblad Masters 2 Emotion
Hasselblad - manufacturer of the finest photographic technology for more than five decades—sponsors the elite Masters contest each year, recognizing both the top established and upcoming photographers. Hasselblad awarded one Master for each of ten categories: architecture, editorial, fashion/beauty, fine art, general photography, nature/landscape, portrait, wedding/social, product and up-and-coming artist.
Starting with nearly 3,000, almost double the number from 2008, accomplished entrants who submitted ten photographs each, the Hasselblad team rigorously narrowed the selection to 100 finalists. Because of the high level of participation, the size of the judging panel was increased twofold. An internal jury performed the first round of eliminations and an elite panel of industry professionals, including leading art directors, editors and photographers such as Steve McCurry (USA), Anton Corbijn (Netherlands) and Tim Flach (UK) made the winning selections from a group of 100 finalists.
For the first time, a public poll counted as one vote for each category. In addition to being granted the distinguished title of Master, the winners will each have access to Hasselblad’s flagship camera system, the H4D, a movie camera and a script to interpret the theme “emotion” in their own distinctive ways. This book contains the compelling projects from each of the winning photographers.
