Moscow Stations - Faber Modern Classics
Venya is more interested in how much he and his colleagues can drink during the working day than in his job. Once he is fired, he spends the last of his money on booze and sets off on a train journey to visit beautiful, picturesque, utopian Petushki, where his beloved and child are waiting for him. But Venya's drinking gets out of control on the train, and Petushki seems to lie increasingly beyond his grasp. Funny and sad, Yerofeev's alcohol-soaked story of a man on a train perfectly captures Soviet society on the brink of doom: exhausted, corrupt and heading into the night in sodden dignity. "A dark and hilarious work cocktailing the satire of Gogol with the gutter-level eye of Bukowski and the menace and nightmare vision of Genet." (Time Out). Moscow Stations - the only novel published by the Russian writer Venedikt Yerofeev - was written in 1969 and existed first only amongst samizdat circles, as a typed manuscript passed hand to hand by readers in Soviet Russia. It was first published officially in the magazine Sobriety and Culture in 1989. This translation was first published by Faber in 1997.

War and Peace
This beautiful Penguin Classics clothbound edition of Tolstoy's great novel is translated with an introduction and notes by Anthony Briggs, and with an afterword by Orlando Figes. At a glittering society party in St Petersburg in 1805, conversations are dominated by the prospect of war. Terror swiftly engulfs the country as Napoleon's army marches on Russia, and the lives of three young people are changed forever. The stories of quixotic Pierre, cynical Andrey and impetuous Natasha interweave with a huge cast, from aristocrats and peasants to soldiers and Napoleon himself. In War and Peace, Tolstoy entwines grand themes - conflict and love, birth and death, free will and faith - with unforgettable scenes of nineteenth-century Russia, to create a magnificent epic of human life in all its imperfection and grandeur. Anthony Briggs' superb translation combines stirring, accessible prose with fidelity to Tolstoy's original, while Orlando Figes' afterword discusses the novel's vast scope and depiction of Russian identity. This edition also contains appendices, notes, a list of prominent characters and maps. "A masterpiece...This new translation is excellent." (Anthony Beevor).

The Ballad of the Sad Cafe
Few writers have expressed loneliness, the need for human understanding and the search for love with such power and poetic sensibility as the American writer Carson McCullers, and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe collects her best-loved novella together with six short stories, published in Penguin Modern Classics. Miss Amelia Evans, tall, strong and nobody's fool, runs a small-town store. Except for a disastrous marriage that lasted just ten days, she has always lived alone. Then Cousin Lymon appears from nowhere, a strutting hunchback who steals Miss Amelia's heart. Together they transform the store into a lively, popular cafe where the locals come to drink and gossip. But when her rejected and dangerous ex-husband Marvin Macy returns, the result is a bizarre love triangle that brings with it violence, hatred and betrayal. Among other fine works, the collection also includes 'Wunderkind', McCullers's first published story written when she was only seventeen, about a musical prodigy who suddenly realizes she will not go on to become a great pianist. Carson McCullers (1917-1967) was the critically acclaimed author of several popular novels in the 1940s and '50s, including The Member of the Wedding (1946), adapted for the stage in the 1950s and filmed in 1952 and 1997. Her novels frequently depicted life in small towns of the southeastern United States and were marked by themes of loneliness and spiritual isolation. Other films based on her books are Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967, with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando), The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1968, starring Alan Arkin) and The Ballad of the Sad Cafe (1991, starring Vanessa Redgrave). If you enjoyed The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, you might like McCullers' The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. 'Unexpectedly moving, grimly amusing, intensely atmospheric' The Times 'The work she has accomplished is note eclipsed by time but further illuminated' Tennessee Williams.

The Nowhere Girls
Three misfits come together to avenge the rape of a fellow classmate and in the process trigger a change in the misogynist culture at their high school transforming the lives of everyone around them in this searing and timely story.
Who are the Nowhere Girls?
They’re everygirl. But they start with just three:
Grace Salter is the new girl in town, whose family was run out of their former community after her southern Baptist preacher mom turned into a radical liberal after falling off a horse and bumping her head.
Rosina Suarez is the queer punk girl in a conservative Mexican immigrant family, who dreams of a life playing music instead of babysitting her gaggle of cousins and waitressing at her uncle’s restaurant.
Erin Delillo is obsessed with two things: marine biology and Star Trek: The Next Generation, but they aren’t enough to distract her from her suspicion that she may in fact be an android.
When Grace learns that Lucy Moynihan, the former occupant of her new home, was run out of town for having accused the popular guys at school of gang rape, she’s incensed that Lucy never had justice. For their own personal reasons, Rosina and Erin feel equally deeply about Lucy’s tragedy, so they form an anonymous group of girls at Prescott High to resist the sexist culture at their school, which includes boycotting sex of any kind with the male students.
Told in alternating perspectives, this groundbreaking novel is an indictment of rape culture and explores with bold honesty the deepest questions about teen girls and sexuality.

Calling Romeo
Have you ever wondered whether the grass is greener on the other side? This novel is about a successful woman, Juliet, who is in a comfortable relationship with Will, but can't help feeling that they're more like friends who have sex (and bicker from time to time) than lovers. She can't help wishing that she had more romance in her life. When she meets a sexy, dark-eyed Adonis from a rival advertising agency she is sorely tempted. During the course of the novel, Juliet must work out what's really important in life and whether romance really is all about sexy lingerie and red roses. The action takes place in London, Yorkshire and Italy (Verona, of course) and is full of great characters (an American would-be single mother to a widowed eightysomething as well as an Irish bookie) as it shows the misunderstandings that arise between couples, and gives different perspectives on love and life.

Art Since 1989
The years since 1989 have seen a complete untethering of what art can be, who makes it and where it can be found, which has been matched by a reassessment of art's appropriate place in society and the financial value that should be attached to it. In this new book in the World of Art series, Kelly Grovier surveys the dynamic developments in art practice worldwide since 1989, going in search of those artists who have undertaken to shape a fresh visual vocabulary and whose work reflects on these turbulent years. The book's ten chapters examine the key themes in contemporary art, from portraiture in the age of face transplants and facial recognition software, to political activism, science and religion. Artists discussed include Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois, Damien Hirst, George Condo, Marlene Dumas, Sean Scully, Cindy Sherman, Banksy, Ai Weiwei, Antony Gormley, Christo and Jean-Claude, Jenny Holzer, Chuck Close and Cornelia Parker. The final chapter, a timeline, traces the evolution of art practice in this period by looking closely at one key artwork from each year.

Mondrian
A key figure in the international avant-garde, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) was at once an extraordinary painter and art theoretician whose influence is as profound today as it ever was. For Mondrian, "the emotion of beauty is always hindered by particular appearance of an 'object'; the object must therefore be abstracted from any figurative representation." After coining the term "Neo-plasticism", he pursued painting composed only of the most fundamental aspects of primary color (red, yellow, blue) against a grid of black vertical and horizontal lines and a white base background. Mondrian's vision was that this essential painting would help to achieve a society in which art as such has no place, but rather exists for the total realization of 'beauty'. To contemporaries, Mondrian represented an artist not only of absolute modernity, but also of great integrity. Today, he remains one of the most distinctive practitioners in all of modern art, the star of exhibitions around the world, and an abiding inspiration for fashion, art, architecture, and design, from White Stripes album covers to Yves Saint Laurent dresses.
