The extraordinary inside story of how Instagram took over the world
In April 2012, Facebook spent $715 million buying out a photo app that was less than two years old.
Everyone in Silicon Valley thought it was crazy. In a market crowded with new social media platforms, why would Facebook spend so much cash on just another photo website - let alone one with a name as weird as Instagram?
Ten years later, and Instagram has a value of over $100 billion. With over a billion active users, it is second in size only to Facebook.
In No Filter, Bloomberg's Sarah Frier tells the remarkable inside story of how Instagram became the hottest website on Earth.
With astonishing access to all the key players, she recounts the fateful meeting of the Instagram founders in 2010. She explores the company's unlikely acquisition by Facebook, and the internal clashes over whether it could retain its autonomy. And she reveals how, when Facebook entered a tailspin brought about by data misuse and fake news, it was Instagram that came to the rescue.
But this is not just a Silicon Valley story.
No Filter reveals how Instagram has transformed global society - creating a new kind of celebrity, the 'influencer', with unprecedented control over how we all buy; becoming home not only to photos of pets and holidays, but also to bullies, racists, and conspiracy theorists; and helping create a world in which a handful of tech companies have unprecedented control over how we all shop and think.
The result is a book that raises profound questions about how technology is changing the world. Is Instagram really just another photo website? Or might it represent the future of every business on Earth?

A multietnikus nemzetállam
Kárpátalja szovjeteknek való átadása, a holokauszt tragédiája azonban rácáfolt a reményekre. A "masaryki republika" határkisebbségei - a németek, magyarok és lengyelek - eleve történeti kényszerhelyzetként élték meg a soknemzetiségű Csehszlovákiát, s emiatt jórészt anyaországaik revíziós törekvéseire hagyatkoztak.
Hárommilliónál több német elűzése, a magyar kisebbség felszámolásának kísérlete és a lengyel határkonfliktusok sorozata jelezte, hogy a multietnikus nemzetállam nemzetiségpolitikai kísérletei kudarccal végződtek. Az 1920-as, majd az 1960-as évek felemás etnopolitikai próbálkozásai megtorpantak. Autonóm nemzeti közösségek szabad társulása helyett a többségi diszkrimináció, az államideológia szintjére emelt kisebbségellenesség, a revízió támogatását a "kollektív bűnösség" elve alapján etnikai tisztogatásokkal büntető nemzetállami logika győzelmét hozták.

Why I am not a Christian
While its tone is playful and frivolous, this book poses tough questions over the nature of religion and belief. Religion provides comfortable responses to the questions that have always beset humankind - why are we here, what is the point of being alive, how ought we to behave? Russell snatches that comfort away, leaving us instead with other, more troublesome alternatives: responsibility, autonomy, self-awareness. He tells us that the time to live is now, the place to live is here, and the way to be happy is to ensure others are happy.

Blood and Land
Blood and Land is a dazzling, panoramic account of the history and achievements of Native North Americans, and why they matter today. It is about why no understanding of the wider world is possible without comprehending the original inhabitants of the United States and Canada: Native Americans, First Nations and Arctic peoples.
This highly personal book, based on years of travel and first-hand research in North America, introduces a deeply complex story, of myriad identities and determined ethnicities - from the desert Southwest to the high Arctic, from first contact between Europeans and Native Americans to the challenges of Native leadership today. Instead of writing a chronological history, King confronts the reader with the paradoxes, diversity and successes of Native North Americans. Their astonishing ingenuity and supple intelligence enabled, after centuries of suffering both violence and dispossession, a striking level of recovery, optimism and autonomy in the twenty-first century.
Beautifully illustrated and filled with arresting and surprising stories, Blood and Land looks well beyond the 'feathers-and-failure' narratives beloved by historians to show us Native North America as it was and is.

City of Girls
"Life is both fleeting and dangerous, and there is no point in denying yourself pleasure, or being anything other than what you are."
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love.
In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance. Her affluent parents send her to Manhattan to live with her Aunt Peg, who owns a flamboyant, crumbling midtown theater called the Lily Playhouse. There Vivian is introduced to an entire cosmos of unconventional and charismatic characters, from the fun-chasing showgirls to a sexy male actor, a grand-dame actress, a lady-killer writer, and no-nonsense stage manager. But when Vivian makes a personal mistake that results in professional scandal, it turns her new world upside down in ways that it will take her years to fully understand. Ultimately, though, it leads her to a new understanding of the kind of life she craves - and the kind of freedom it takes to pursue it. It will also lead to the love of her life, a love that stands out from all the rest.
Now eighty-nine years old and telling her story at last, Vivian recalls how the events of those years altered the course of her life - and the gusto and autonomy with which she approached it. "At some point in a woman's life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time," she muses. "After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is." Written with a powerful wisdom about human desire and connection, City of Girls is a love story like no other.
Calibans War
For someone who didn't intend to wreck the solar system's fragile balance of power, Jim Holden did a pretty good job of it. While Earth and Mars have stopped shooting each other, the core alliance is shattered. The outer planets and the Belt are uncertain in their new - possibly temporary - autonomy. Then, on one of Jupiter's moons, a single super-soldier attacks, slaughtering soldiers of Earth and Mars indiscriminately and reigniting the war. The race is on to discover whether this is the vanguard of an alien army, or if the danger lies closer to home.

Emma
"Emma" is considered by many readers to be Jane Austen's crowning achievement, a timeless comedy of manners that lays bare the limits on women's autonomy in Regency England. The disparity between Emma Woodhouse's self-confidence and self-knowledge, and her determination to arrange marriages for her friends while avoiding one for herself, leads to a painful series of misunderstandings for everyone who suffers from her well-meaning altruism - and with Mr Knightley being the only person of her acquaintance who has the good sense to challenge her, Emma must eventually recognize her match in every sense. Long praised for its rich detail and perfect craftsmanship, "Emma" is one of those classic masterpieces that readers go back to again and again for its inexhaustible fund of irresistible humanity.

My First Box of Colors
The world of colours is ready to be explored, thanks to the many Montessori play activities in the box, which have been specifically designed to make learning fun and to stimulate children's autonomy. By means of the 63 tablets with all the gradients of 9 colours and the 27 tablets with illustrations of coloured objects, children between 3 and 5 years develop their sense of colour, by learning to recognize and distinguish shades, and to associate colours to objects in daily life The structure of the activities suggested in the texts develops around some fundamental Montessori principles: - the content of the games follows a progressive complexity, to allow the child to become gradually familiar with it; - each activity has 3 progressive stages of learning: 1. presentation of the material through senses, 2. Recognition of the learning object material, 3. re-enactment of the material; - in each activity the child can directly control his mistakes, so that he can realize by himself the accuracy of his work; - the adult has a role of assistance and introduction to the various activities but the child can play independently the games; - handling and practical experience have a central role: often is required you to glue stickers, cut, draw and finger paint.

Art in Hungary, 1956-1980 - Doublespeak and Beyond
The international significance of the art produced in Hungary in the 1960s and 1970s has come to the fore in recent years. Nevertheless, studies of modern and contemporary art in Eastern Europe during the Soviet era tend to focus on their relationship to Western art, with an emphasis on the parallel development of similar artistic practices - an approach that risks overlooking the specific circumstances of the art's making. In Hungary's case, artists of the neo-avant-garde found themselves in an increasingly isolated position, caught between the ruling communist authorities, who condemned their art as a product of capitalist cultural imperialism, and a predominantly conservative public, which rejected it as a foreign creation alien to the spirit of national culture.
Art in Hungary, 1956-1980 provides a unique insight into the ways in which Hungarian neo-avant-garde artists both responded to and fought against a system that was determined to deny them a sense of autonomy. At the heart of the book is a commitment to understanding Hungarian contemporary art of the 1960s and 1970s - a time of oppressive communist rule in the aftermath of the failed revolution of 1956 - in the context of the conditions in which it was created. Featuring more than 250 illustrations, a bold design and essays on a diverse range of subjects, this book, the outcome of a major international research project, represents the authoritative account and analysis of a remarkable period in the history of Hungarian art.

The Virtues of the Table: How to Eat and Think
How we eat, farm and shop for food is not only a matter of taste. Our choices regarding what we eat involve every essential aspect of our human nature: the animal, the sensuous, the social, the cultural, the creative, the emotional and the intellectual. Thinking seriously about food requires us to consider our relationship to nature, to our fellow animals, to each other and to ourselves. So can thinking about food teach us about being virtuous, and can what we eat help us to decide how to live? From the author of The Ego Trick and The Pig that Wants to be Eaten comes a thought-provoking exploration of our values and vices. What can fasting teach us about autonomy? Should we, like Kant, 'dare to know' cheese? Should we take media advice on salt with a pinch of salt? And can food be more virtuous, more inherently good, than art?

Documents on Contemporary Crafts
Documents on Contemporary Crafts is a book series published by Norwegian Crafts in collaboration with Arnoldsche Art Publishers. The series provides a critical reflection of contemporary crafts in a wider context and in doing so asks questions about the ties between contemporary craft, fine art and design, thus helping to redefine the concept of crafts as such. The five volumes discuss such topics as skills, materiality, curating, collecting, perception and New Materialism. The more than thirty contributors range from leading craft theorists, such as Jorunn Veiteberg, Glenn Adamson and Liesbeth den Besten, via academics outside the craft tradition, such as Roger L. Kneebone, professor of surgical education, Trevor Marchand, professor of social anthropology, and Margaret Wasz, consultant psychological therapist, to emerging voices like Sarah R. Gilbert, Marianne Zamecznik and Stephen Knott.
No. 1: Museum for Skills. Skills are essential to the crafts discourse. Yet in an art world that for the last 50 years has become increasingly focused on conceptual strategies, we have seen the tendencies of deskilling and outsourcing. In Museum for Skills, the contributors analyse the current situation for skills by drawing on experience from the fields of brain research, surgery and anthropology.
No. 2: Materiality Matters. If materiality is a quality-related concept in both contemporary crafts and contemporary art, are we talking about the same notion? Or is there a fundamental difference between, on one hand, a maker's confidence in his or her materials, and on the other, a contemporary artist's use and adaption of a given material?
No. 3: Crafting Exhibitions. Curatorial discourse has been an increasingly important aspect of contemporary art. The curator took on a new role as the 'author' of the exhibition. Crafting Exhibitions introduces some of the processes that go into making an exhibition, from developing concepts to the physical realisation. The contributors offer different approaches to exhibitions.
No. 4: On Collecting. Collections make up an important part of the contemporary arts and crafts infrastructure. Collectors and museums help improve the financial situation of artists. Additionally, to be included in the 'right' collection or museum can give an artist a high level of recognition and preserves the art works for the future. On Collecting offers insights into collecting from different perspectives and sheds light on some of the structures that determine the 'collectability' of works of art.
No. 5: Material Perceptions. Contemporary craft objects can be perceived for instance, as works of art in ceramics, glass, textile, metal and wood, or as functional, handmade and everyday objects. Material Perceptions investigates contemporary crafts as representations of reality that do not rely on the concept of autonomy, unravelling the dualism between aesthetic objects and everyday things.

Middle East and Making of Modern World
In The Middle East and the Making of the Modern World, Cyrus Schayegh presents an innovative socio-spatial history that traces how different geographic areas and networks molded the Middle East from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
Centering his study on an area roughly coextensive with modern Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel and Palestine, Schayegh examines the complex interplay of local and transregional forces in a diverse territory that first came under Ottoman rule in the 1500s. For centuries, the major cities of this region?Damascus, Aleppo, Jerusalem, and Beirut?exercised a degree of autonomy. But in the nineteenth century, the Ottoman Empire, responding to the rise of a Eurocentric world economy and European imperialism, attempted to exert greater administrative control. Cities remained powerful, but their ties to one another grew stronger as the region became more integrated. These developments did not cease with the Ottoman Empire’s collapse after World War I. Partitioned by the victorious British and French, this territory (known in Arabic as Bilad al-Sham) became an umbrella region from which new nation states would emerge?states whose very foundations were transnational and tied together multiple urban areas.
Building on the Middle Eastern case, Schayegh argues that the making of the modern world is best seen as the reciprocal transformation of cities, regions, states, and global networks.

How To Be Alone
Our fast-paced society does not approve of solitude; being alone is literally anti-social and some even find it sinister. Why is this so when autonomy, personal freedom and individualism are more highly prized than ever before? Sara Maitland answers this question by exploring changing attitudes throughout history. Offering experiments and strategies for overturning our fear of solitude, she helps us to practise it without anxiety and encourages us to see the benefits of spending time by ourselves. By indulging in the experience of being alone, we can be inspired to find our own rewards and ultimately lead more enriched, fuller lives. One in the new series of books from The School of Life, launched January 2014: How to Age by Anne Karpf How to Develop Emotional Health by Oliver James How to Be Alone by Sara Maitland How to Deal with Adversity by Christopher Hamilton How to Think About Exercise by Damon Young How to Connect with Nature by Tristan Gooley
