The Vampire War
Off to war.Today was supposed to be my day off from training, but when a group of vampires attack me on my way home from church, I'm forced to defend myself. Without my silver sword, that is.Luckily, an amazingly handsome sorcerer comes to my rescue, only to inform me of an impending war brewing between sorcerers and vampires. He says someone is trying to provoke both sides into war, a war neither side will win, and that he needs my help to stop it.I'd love to, but I soon discover that whoever is trying to start this war doesn't just want to start a war, but also wants me on their side. Now I have to not only stop this war before it destroys both sorcerers and vampires alike, but also keep myself from being seduced by the dark side. And that, of course, is far easier said than done.

The Storm of War
On 2 August 1944, Winston Churchill mocked Adolf Hitler in the House of Commons by the rank he had reached in the First World War. 'Russian success has been somewhat aided by the strategy of Herr Hitler, of Corporal Hitler', Churchill jibed. 'Even military idiots find it difficult not to see some faults in his actions'. Andrew Roberts' previous book "Masters and Commanders" studied the creation of Allied grand strategy, "The Storm of War" now analyzes how Axis strategy evolved. Examining the Second World War on every front, Roberts asks whether, with a different decision-making process and a different strategy, the Axis might even have won. Were those German generals who blamed everything on Hitler after the war correct, or were they merely scapegoating their former Fuhrer once he was safely beyond defending himself? The book is full of illuminating sidelights on the principle actors that bring their characters and the ways in which they reached decisions into fresh focus.

Putins War in Syria
Putin intervened in Syria in September 2015, with international critics predicting that Russia would overextend itself and Barack Obama suggesting the country would find itself in a "quagmire" in Syria. Contrary to this, Anna Borshchevskaya argues that in fact Putin achieved significant key domestic and foreign policy objectives without crippling costs, and is well-positioned to direct Syria's future and become a leading power in the Middle East.
This outcome has serious implications for Western foreign policy interests both in the Middle East and beyond. This book places Russian intervention in Syria in this broader context, exploring Putin's overall approach to the Middle East - historically Moscow has a special relationship with Damascus - and traces the political, diplomatic, military and domestic aspects of this intervention. Borshchevskaya delves into the Russian military campaign, public opinion within Russia, as well as Russian diplomatic tactics at the United Nations. Crucially, this book illustrates the impact of Western absence in Syria, particularly US absence, and what the role of the West is, and could be, in the Middle East.
The War of Words
A timely call for recovering the true meanings of the nineteenth-century terms that are hobbling current political debates
"Masterful. . . . James cuts through the tangled terminological and conceptual jungle of modern globalist discourse . . . [with] fascinating discussions of the origins and meanings of the words."-G. John Ikenberry, Foreign Affairs
"James delves into the often-surprising intellectual origins of key concepts in the arguments about globalisation-and illuminates the debate in the process."-Gideon Rachman, Financial Times, "Best Books of 2021: Politics"
Nationalism, conservatism, liberalism, socialism, and capitalism are among the most fiercely debated ideas in contemporary politics. Since these concepts hark back to the nineteenth century, much of their nuanced meaning has been lost, and the words are most often used as epithets that short-circuit productive discussion. In this insightful book, Harold James uncovers the origins of these concepts and examines how the problematic definition and meaning of each term has become an obstacle to respectful communication.
Noting that similar linguistic misunderstandings accompany such newer ideas as geopolitics, neoliberalism, technocracy, and globalism, James argues that a rich historical knowledge of the vocabulary surrounding globalization, politics, and economics-particularly the meaning and the usefulness that drove the original conceptions of the terms-is needed to negotiate the gaps between different understandings and make fruitful political debate once again possible.
The Free World: Art and Thought in the Cold War
The Cold War was not just a contest of power. It was also about ideas, in the broadest sense - economic and political, artistic and personal.
In The Free World, the acclaimed Pulitzer Prize-winning scholar and critic Louis Menand tells the story of American culture in the pivotal years from the end of World War II to Vietnam and stresses the rich flow of ideas across the Atlantic.
How did elitism and an anti-totalitarian scepticism of passion and ideology give way to a new sensibility defined by experimentation and loving the Beatles? How was the ideal of 'freedom' applied to causes that ranged from anti-communism and civil rights to radical acts of self-creation via art and even crime? With the wit and insight familiar to readers of The Metaphysical Club, Menand takes us inside Hannah Arendt's Manhattan, the Paris of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir and the post-war vogue for French existentialism, structuralism and post-structuralism.
He also shows how Europeans played a vital role in promoting and influencing American art and thought, revealing how America's once neglected culture became respected and adored. With unprecedented verve and range, this book offers a masterly account of the main characters and minor figures who played part in shaping the post-war world of art and thought.

But before Ludik and his beloved can pledge their love, an accidental death threatens their happiness. Bad enough that a Fox trespassed into Cat territory, worse that he picked a fight with a bigger Leopard, but the true disaster is the witness who is running home to report that the Cats murdered his kin.
In a mad race to keep the misguided Dog from starting a civil war, Ludik must follow the trail through hostile territory and turn a fierce Wolf into an ally. If he can’t root out the seeds of war before they sprout, how will he preserve the life of the woman he adores?

Namaste
Autorův ášrám je ulice, vagon indického rychlíku, upatlaná jídelna, kam chodí rikšové a studenti. Nepopsatelné kouzlo mizerie lze nakreslit: vtisknout do hrotu tužky a rozmazat prstem. Příběhy prostých lidí, ale i dramata, která se odehrávají v mysli poutníka, jenž se marně snaží pochopit smysl toho pestrého hemžení. Exkurze do nejvyšší duchovní úrovně během kličkování mezi výkaly. Život středověkých kmenových vesničanů, společnost bojující s plasty a betonem. Láska a zbožnost farmářů v odloučených údolích pod čajovými plantážemi, skromnost bosonohého sběrače kokosového nektaru, mizející plážová idyla i rozhovory s brahmány v horách. Svérázný obraz hodně vzdálený od idealizovaných cestopisů. Polovinu čtvercové knihy, jež navazuje na titul Stavitelé, tvoří opět ilustrace.
