A Szeget szeggel, ez a mufajilag nehezen besorolható színdarab a Hercegrol, aki idolegesen másnak adja át a hatalmat, hogy rendet csináljon az általa szabadon engedett erkölcsu Bécsben, s Angelóról, a helytartóról, aki kérlelhetetlenül ítél el más olyan bunért, melyet maga is elkövet, Shakespeare legtalányosabb muvei közé tartozik. A drámai eszme mesze túlno a korai shakespeare-i vígjáték megszokott keretén, s nem egy helyzetben tragikus mozzanatokkal terhes ? a komédia keseru szájízt hagy. Tragikus összeütközés csíráit rejti a bonyodalom csaknem minden szála# Izabellának választani kell szerzetesi fogadalmával is megszentelt erénye vagy fivére élete között. A választás annál is nehezebb, mert Claudio halálfélelmében könyörög Izabellának, hogy mentse meg az Angelo követelte odaadása árán. De még sokkal inkább tragikus koncepció hoséül illik Angelo, aki hatalma teljes súlyával üldözi a közéletben azt a bunt, amelynek magánéletében maga is áldozatul esik. Az erkölcsi bukás nála is züllésre, zsarnoki kegyetlenségre vezet: mialatt a város rendorségét az erkölcsök védelmére mozgósítja, o maga titkos éji találkára készül, majd törvényszegését gaztettel is megtoldja, Izabellának tett ígéretét megszegve nem vonja vissza a Claudio kivégzésére adott parancsot, tehát bunt bunre halmozva jó elore megtervezi a tett eltitkolásának módját. Ha a Szeget szeggel ezeket a tragikumba forduló bonyodalmakat vígjátékilag feloldja is, a kibontakozásban mindig marad valami fanyar íz. A darab mindig zavarba ejtette a kritikát. Egy 20. századi Shakespeare-kutató a költo e korszakbeli hangulatában helyesen látja meg azt az elszántságot, amely ?vad haraggal tép le minden álcát, s a valóságot a maga rút és visszataszító alakjában mutatja meg?.

A szentivánéji álom
A ?Szentivánéji álom, Shakespeare korai komédiája feltehetőleg 1594–1596 táján íródott; 1598-ban már ismert színdarabként utal rá a drámaíró egyik kortárs. 1600-ban nyomtatták ki először. Valószínűleg egy főúri esküvő alkalmára készült, s – korabeli szokás szerint – a lakodalmi ünnepség során mutatták be, a darab előadása a mulatság része volt. Témája és cselekménye ehhez az alkalomhoz igazodik: szerelemről és házasságról szól, a szerelem útjában álló akadályok legyőzéséről, a viszálykodó szerelmesek megbékéléséről, a szerelmet korlátozó tilalmak és a beteljesülésre fenekedő veszélyek elhárításáról. De a daraba kerete is első előadásának a körülményeit jeleníti meg, mégpedig játékosan és önirónikusan: miközben Shakespeare társulata eljátssza a Szentivánéji álom című darabot az alkalmul szolgáló főúru esküvőn, a szentivánéji álomban zajló királyi mennyegzőn Theseus, Hippolyta és a többiek mulattatására az athéni mesteremberek alkalmi színésztruppja is színre visz egy színdarabot,a Pyramus és Thisbe című – Vackor, az egiyk műkedvelő szereplő szavával – „igen siralma skomédiát”, amely egyébként szintén a szerelemről és annak veszélyeiről szól.
