Puis apparaît Lex, la nice de Sophia qui adore sa tante mais a tout gagner sa mort. Et puis il y a le Vieux Vandoosler, l’oncle de Marc le médiéviste, l’ancien flic revenu de tout mais pas des femmes; et puis la belle Juliette, l’amie intime de Sophia, propriétaire du Tonneau o Sophia mangeait tous les jeudis midi. Entre humour et désenchantement, une histoire de haine et de jalousie vieille de quinze ans trouvera sa conclusion aprs une série de meurtres plus mystérieux les uns que les autres. On retrouve toutes les qualités de l’auteur de Ceux qui vont mourir te saluent que la presse a largement salué. Ici les personnages ont mri, la flamboyance de l’adolescence qui était celle des “ empereurs ” n’est plus au rendez-vous, les personnages ont reçu des coups, mais ils ont toujours cette passion pour la vie, cette curiosité pour les tres, cette légreté et cette capacité de se moquer de tout et d’eux-mmes qui en font des héros uniques et inoubliables.

Nous nous repaissons de faits épouvantablement authentiques. ») Il passe la boxe au crible dans Sport sanglant, et dans Stephanie, un texte aussi dérangeant que bouleversant, il redit sa fascination et sa compassion pour les victimes de crimes sexuels (« Son parfum qui subsistait malgré toutes ces années –ou une illusion née de votre désir de le capter »), enfin il ramne l’inénarrable Danny Getchell dans le truculent Baisodrome d’Hollywood. Il parle aussi de son pre, de la peine de mort, de la justice, de ses provocations, avec force, honnteté voire brutalité, dans ce style coup de poing qui n’appartient qu’ lui. C’est un alcool fort qui vous fracasse la tte. C’est du Ellroy.
