Výběr kandidátů představuje jeden z nejvýznamnějších procesů spojených s volbami, které jsou klíčovým aspektem fungování moderních demokracií. Podoba a výstupy nominačních procesů významně odhalují, jak politické strany operují v rámci svých vlastních organizačních struktur. Proces výběru kandidátů také dopadá na reálnou podobu politiky, neboť politická elita se formuje z části vybraných kandidátů. I z těchto důvodů získává toto téma stále větší význam v politologii.
