Judgements on History and Historians
Western Civilisation was in its pomp when Jacob Burckhardt delivered his Judgements on History and Historians, European Empires spanned the globe, while the modern age was being forged in the nationalist revolutions of 1848. As a tutor to the young Friedrich Nietzsche as well as one of the first historians to take 'culture' as his subject rather than the triumphs and travails of kings and generals, Burckhardt was at the vanguard of this modern sensibility. Ambitious in its scope, ranging from the days of Ancient Egypt, through the Reformation to the time of Napoleon, this is indeed a history of 'Western Civilization', written before two monstrous world wars threw such a concept into disrepute.

Irish Fairy Tales
Illustrated by John D. Batten. Stories selected by Jennifer Chandler, The Folklore Society.
The captivating Irish stories collected in this new edition include both comic tales such as Paddy O'Kelly and the Weasel, and tales of heroes from ancient literature such as How Cormac Mac Art went to Faery.
By turns funny, fantastical and mysterious, the stories are matched in liveliness by the original illustrations of John D. Batten. It would be hard to find a better introduction for children to the special magic of Celtic storytelling.
The stories in this book are taken from Joseph Jacob's classic two-volume collection Celtic Fairy Tales (1891-2) and More Celtic Fairy Tales (1894)

Kingsbridge-trilógia 1: A katedrális
A nagyszabású, több évszázadot átölelő Kingsbridge-trilógia története az angliai kisvárosban, Kingsbridge-ben kezdődik a l2. században. A tehetséges és ambiciózus Benedek-rendi perjel, Philip az apátság számára új templomot akar építeni, amely a világ legnagyobb gótikus katedrálisa lesz. Építőmestere az isteni tehetségű Tom, aki kreativitásával és szárnyaló fantáziájával képes felépíteni a 123 méter magas templomtornyot, ami sok évszázadon át a város büszkesége lesz.

If You`re Reading this It`s Too Late

to remind you of how we last left our heroes, Cass and Max-Ernest, as they awaited intiation into the mysterious Terces Society, or the ongoing fight against the evil Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. I certainly won't be telling you about how the kids stumble
upon the Museum of Magic, where they finally meet the amazing Pietro! Oh, blast! I've done it again. Well, at least I didn't tell you about the missing Sound Prism, the nefarious Lord Pharaoh, or the mysterious creature born in a bottle over 500 yea
rs ago, the key to the biggest secret of all. I really can't help myself, now can I? Let's face it-if you're reading this, it's too late.

Prague 1967
Timm Rautert (born 1941) met Josef Sudek for the first time on a study trip to Prague in the spring of 1967. The photography student and the 71-year-old Sudek-who was arguably the most important Czech landscape and still-life photographer of the 20th century and a cult figure in his native country-instantly took to each other, and Rautert began photographing the artist in his studio and at his home. He accompanied him on his strolls in parks in Little Prague on the left bank of the Vltava river as he searched for adequate perspectives, and documented his work process inside and outside the darkroom. First published in 2008, the "Sudek" series, here compiled in this new volume, is an extraordinary chronicle of a fascinating personality and place in the run-up to the Prague Spring, and marks the beginning of Rautert's career, during which the portrait and people at work were of particular importance to him.

NEW STATESMAN AND EVENING STANDARD BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2017
'Brilliant ... a staggering story' Robert Fox, Evening Standard, Books of the Year
'Fascinating, vast and rich ... a dramatic family memoir' Guardian
Uncovering his family's remarkable and moving stories, Mark Mazower recounts the sacrifices and silences that marked a generation and their descendants. It was a family that fate drove into the siege of Stalingrad, the Vilna ghetto, occupied Paris, and even into the ranks of the Wehrmacht. His British father was the lucky one, the son of Russian Jewish emigrants who settled in London after escaping the civil war and revolution. Max, the grandfather, had started out as a socialist and manned the barricades against tsarist troops, but never spoke of it. His wife, Frouma, came from a family ravaged by the Great Terror yet somehow making their way in Soviet society.
In the centenary of the Russian Revolution, What You Did Not Tell recounts a brand of socialism erased from memory - humanistic, impassioned, and broad-ranging in its sympathies. But it also explores the unexpected happiness that may await history's losers, the power of friendship, and the love of place that allowed Max and Frouma's son to call England home.

FIVE WOMEN. ONE QUESTION: What is a woman for?
In this ferociously imaginative novel, abortion is once again illegal in America, in-vitro fertilization is banned, and the Personhood Amendment grants rights of life, liberty, and property to every embryo. In a small Oregon fishing town, five very different women navigate these new barriers.
Ro, a single high-school teacher, is trying to have a baby on her own, while also writing a biography of Eivor, a little-known 19th-century female polar explorer. Susan is a frustrated mother of two, trapped in a crumbling marriage. Mattie is the adopted daughter of doting parents and one of Ro's best students, who finds herself pregnant with nowhere to turn. And Gin is the gifted, forest-dwelling homeopath, or "mender," who brings all their fates together when she's arrested and put on trial in a frenzied modern-day witch hunt.
RED CLOCKS is at once a riveting drama whose mysteries unfold with magnetic energy, and a shattering novel of ideas. With the verve of Naomi Alderman's THE POWER and the prescient brilliance of THE HANDMAID'S TALE, Leni Zumas' incredible new novel is fierce, fearless and frighteningly plausible.

The New Annotated Frankenstein
The most complete annotated volume of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein ever compiled appears for the 200th anniversary of the original publication.
"Remarkably, a nineteen-year-old, writing her first novel, penned a tale that combines tragedy, morality, social commentary, and a thoughtful examination of the very nature of knowledge", writes best-selling author Leslie S. Klinger. Yet Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is often reductively dismissed as a tacky monster film or a cautionary tale about experimental science gone haywire. Now, Klinger does for Shelley's story of early nineteenth-century horror what he did for Sherlock Holmes, Dracula and H. P. Lovecraft, bringing this gothic tale to nightmarish life by reproducing the original text with the most lavishly illustrated and comprehensively annotated edition to date.
For the first time, The New Annotated Frankenstein brilliantly accounts for variations between the 1818 and the 1831 versions of the text and includes an introduction by the director of Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro, and an afterword by feminist scholar Anne K. Mellor. With over 200 illustrations and nearly 1,000 annotations, Klinger illuminates every hidden dimension of the "first truly modern myth."

The Canterville Ghost and Other Stories
When the Americans Mr and Mrs Otis and their four children move into Canterville Chase, its previous occupant Lord Canterville warns them that the ghost of his ancestor still haunts the house. Their disbelief is soon shattered by the nightly sound of rattling chains in the hallways and the appearance of mysterious bloodstains in the living room. However, the ghost struggles to intimidate his new victims, as they counter his ghoulish behaviour with typically transatlantic pragmatism, offering lubricator for his chains and cleaning up the stains with detergent. As the spirit is deserted by his capacity to scare, Virginia, the Otises' daughter, gets to know him and learns the tragic tale behind his sad fate.Sparkling with his trademark wit, this classic tale is one of Oscar Wilde's finest stories and is presented here with three other comic mystery stories, 'Lord Arthur Savile's Crime', 'The Sphinx without a Secret' and 'The Model Millionaire', all of which were first published together in 1891.
