Nežádám, abyste uvěřili tomuto šílenému a zároveň docela obyčejnému příběhu, který vám tu hodlám vylíčit, a ani to nečekám. Opravdu bych byl blázen, kdybych v to doufal, zvlášť když příhodě nemohu uvěřit ani já sám. Přesto blázen nejsem a určitě se mi to nezdálo. Ale zítra mám zemřít, a tak chci dnes ulevit svému svědomí. Rád bych světu předložil, jednoduše, stručně a bez složitého vysvětlování, k čemu došlo v mém domě. Ve svém důsledku mě tento podivuhodný sled děsivých událostí silně potrápil a nakonec docela zničil. Těmito slovy začíná známá próza E. A. Poea Černý kocour. V této i v ostatních povídkách našeho výběru se čtenář setkává s jinou, temnější realitou, rozum se střetává s nepravděpodobností a objevuje se nadpřirozeno. Poe je právem považován za průkopníka hororových příběhů, který svými texty ovlivnil generace spisovatelů a pro mnohé z čtenářů zůstává dosud nepřekonán.
