Szürrealizmusba hajló és gyakran horrorisztikus látásmódja sokkal inkább a 20. századot idézi, és műveinek egyik korai fordítója, Charles Baudelaire épp azért magasztalta Poe-t, mert az író szerinte nagyon nem amerikai, és Baudelaire sokkal közelebb érezte Poe művészetét a saját, illetve a francia századvég szellemiségéhez.
