Mistr hororu, jak jej neznáte. Klasik hrůzostrašné povídky by nemohl existovat bez protikladných vlivů, a tak vedle jeho nejlepších děsuplných povídek, například Sudu vína amontilladského nebo Skokana, můžeme postavit pěkně úderné, vypointované grotesky, protože humor a horor mají k sobě mnohdy nebezpečně blízko. Tam, kde se osnuje ďábelská pomsta, nechybí satirický osten, nebo dokonce úsměvný záblesk šílenství. Ostatně koho muže napadnout udělat z pacientů blázince zároveň ošetřovatele (Šílený psychiatr), z nevěřícího Tomáše hrdinu nejnepravděpodobnějších bizarních situací (Anděl pitvornosti) anebo nechat přijít chvástavého idiota doslova o hlavu? U některých kousků se nasmějete tak, až vás bude píchat v bránici, mrazit v šíji, a nakonec budete i soucítit se šíleným vrahem, který se rozhodne pomstít bezpočet příkoří zvláště zavrženíhodným způsobem, pohrbením zaživa. Obět v rolničkách Kašpárka, příšerný klaun Skokan, který má v oblibě obzvláště krutý humor. Ptáte se proč? Vždyť přece Vrah jsi ty!, tak proč by ses, čtenáři, nemohl smát i s Poem naposledy?
