The Capture of a Slaver
A true personal account of the capture of a slave-running ship by a United States gunship in the fleet assigned for the suppression of the slave trade. It is told in 1900 by John Taylor Wood, who, 50 years earlier, had been a young midshipmen on the United States brig Porpoise in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of West Africa, at the mouth of the Niger River. The captain and crew of the Porpoise sight a slave-running ship, give chase, fire upon it, capture, board, and take its captain and crew into custody, in irons and under guard. Wood describes: "From the time we first got on board we had heard moans, cries, and rumblings coming from below, and as soon as the captain and crew were removed, the hatches had been taken off, when there arose a hot blast as from a charnel house, sickening and overpowering. In the hold were three or four hundred human beings, gasping, struggling for breath, dying; their bodies, limbs, faces, all expressing terrible suffering. In their agonizing fight for life, some had torn or wounded themselves or their neighbors dreadfully; some were stiffened in the most unnatural positions. As soon as I knew the condition of things I sent the boat back for the doctor and some whiskey...."Wood continues describing the voyage to return the captured slaves to the authorities of Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, where the United States had arranged for repatriation of emancipated slaves. This story was originally published as "The Capture of a Slaver" in the Atlantic Monthly 86 (1900): 451-463.

Jemina, the Mountain Girl
Written circa 1917, and published published much later in "Vanity Fair". It was later first published in book form in Tales of the Jazz Age in 1922.Written, like "Tarquin of Cheapside," while I was at Princeton, this sketch was published years later in "Vanity Fair." For its technique I must apologize to Mr. Stephen Leacock.I have laughed over it a great deal, especially when I first wrote it, but I can laugh over it no longer. Still, as other people tell me it is amusing, I include it here. It seems to me worth preserving a few years—at least until the ennui of changing fashions suppresses me, my books, and it together.

Author Interview
Why did you choose to write a fantasy book that heavily involves a cell phone?
Phones are a huge part of everyday life. Smart phone are these tiny pieces of massive technology we use everyday without really thinking about how astounding they are. But what if phones could be used for more than just scrolling through social media? What if an entire magical library could be hidden in your pocket? I wanted modern convenience to meet magic in a new way.
What does Bryant Adams bring to the world of wizards that readers haven’t seen before?
Bryant Adams is not your standard hero. He is not the chosen one, and the world may be doomed if he’s in charge of saving us all.
Bryant is a geek—the nerdy sidekick of the coolest kid in high school—who’s trying really hard to survive being a wizard but is too terrified to talk to the girl of his dreams.
He’s just a boy trying to get through his teen years without too much emotional damage…and then magic happens.
Who would enjoy this book?
If you like humor with a touch of snark, romance with a hint of wit, and magic that might destroy the world as we know it, Bryant Adams is the wizard for you.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona
The Two Gentlemen of Verona is a comedy by William Shakespeare from early in his career. It has the smallest cast of any of Shakespeare's plays, and is the first of his plays in which a heroine dresses as a boy. It deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity. The highlight of the play is considered by some to be Launce, the clownish servant of Proteus, and his dog Crab, to whom "the most scene-stealing non-speaking role in the canon" has been attributed.

The Pit: A Story of Chicago
Norris described The Pit as a fictitious narrative of a "deal" in the Chicago wheat pit, which is the nickname of the trading floor of the Chicago Board of Trade, where commodities are traded like stocks and bonds. One man tries to corner the market on wheat to make a fortune. More than a business story, the novel deals with love and the lack of love in a relationship, selfishness, power, greed, the financial power of men and lack of their power to control events that are shaped by nature. Quote:“Think of it, the food of hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people just at the mercy of a few men down there on the Board of Trade. They make the price. They say just how much the peasant shall pay for his loaf of bread. If he can’t pay the price, he simply starves.”These poor people’s lives are completely out of their hands. In contrast, Norris suggests that ultimately the men down in the Pit don’t have power over them either, nor over their own lives, because above all, nature rules.
