Bola napísaná na vianočné obdobie roku 1734 a obsahuje hudbu zo skorších skladieb vrátane troch svetských kantát napísaných v rokoch 1733 a 1734 a zväčša stratenej cirkevnej kantáty BWV 248a. Dátum je potvrdený v Bachovom rukopise. Ďalšie úplné verejnévystúpenie malo až 17. decembra 1857 Sing-Akademie zu Berlin pod vedením Eduarda Grella.
