Před mnoha lety Will Eisner marně hledal nakladatele pro své revoluční dílo, Smlouvu s Bohem. Komiksový román nakonec vyšel dosti nenápadně v roce 1978 a až později si získal obrovský věhlas, takže přinesl uspokojení nejen samotnému autorovi, ale také se stal inspirací pro celou generaci „sekvenčních umělců“.
Will Eisner sám sebe popisuje jako „výtvarně nadaného svědka, který podává hlášení o životě, smrti, utrpení a nikdy nekončícím boji“.
