Performing Visible Pregnancy in Shakespeare's Plays

This Element considers pregnant women and their costumes in the staging of Shakespeare's plays. It examines the connections between a character's costume and the changing social conventions of pregnancy. It questions mid twentieth century productions' reduction and elimination of well-established visible pregnancy costumes. It considers the role played by the sexual revolution in the sixties in visible pregnancy's reinstatement. The Element focusses on the varied significance of its presence to actors and directors and explores the archives to chart this previously under-examined interaction between social conventions, costumes, and the actors who wear them.

Unveiling Lady Scott

This Element sheds new light on Walter Scott's work by investigating the French influence of his wife, Charlotte Charpentier, later Lady Scott, through her transcultural upbringing and international connections. Much of the limited information about her is tainted by misconceptions from predominantly British male biographers of Scott, whose perspectives were centred on the great man and coloured by anti-French sentiment during the revolutionary period. Through new French and British public records, historical archives, annual registers, and personal materials like letters and diaries from the Scotts' family and social circles, this Element corrects false allegations and highlights her significant, yet largely unrecognised, behind-the-scenes social and literary influence on Scott's writing. By analysing these sources and conducting in-depth readings of Scott's texts, the Element emphasises Scott's collaborative literary approach and argues that Lady Scott, a knowledgeable art and literature enthusiast, greatly assisted him in his work as his secretary, amanuensis, and proofreader.

The Burning Origin

A searing story about homecoming, set in RomeGabriele Bilancini hasn’t been home for four years. Home is the Tuscolano neighbourhood in Rome, where he was born and grew up with his parents, sister, and a tight-knit group of friends. Today, he lives in Milan and he’s a world-famous designer. The perfect example of “making it”. Back home, nothing has changed. His friends'' lives above all: everything is the same, as if no time at all had passed. Ashamed of his origins, but unsatisfied with his present, however successful, Gabriele finds himself enveloped into the sweet, suffocating embrace of the past. An embrace that will force him to confront the deep fracture within himself. Mencarelli distills these elements with stunning clarity in a fast-paced novel. He offers us a passionate portrait of a Roman suburban neighbourhood that could be any suburb, real or imagined, where the protagonist nurtures a desire to express himself that is never satisfied, and a need to belong that can never be fulfilled.

Kappa

'Enchanting and sometimes terrifying' Jorge Luis Borges'Exquisite' Sunday TimesA lone mountain hiker falls through a hole in the ground into Kappaland, inhabited by creatures that are half tiger, half turtle. Here, children choose whether to be born, unemployed workers are turned into sandwich meat, and human artists are enshrined as saints. Despite the Kappas' strange and often gruesome ways, it's a return to the world above that drives the narrator to madness in Akutagawa's only novel. Written as Japan entered an era of aggressive imperialism, this surreal satire is a darkly comic cry of protest.Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.Translated by Geoffrey Bownas.Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927) was one of Japan's leading literary figures in the Taisho period. Regarded as the father of the Japanese short story, he produced over 150 in his short lifetime. Haunted by the fear that he would inherit his mother's madness, Akutagawa suffered from worsening mental health problems towards the end of his life and committed suicide aged 35 by taking an overdose of barbiturates. Pushkin Press also publish a collection of his short stories, Murder in the Age of Enlightenment.Geoffrey Bownas (1923-2011) was born in West Yorkshire. He learned Japanese while serving in the army during the Second World War, and went on to establish Oxford's department of Japanese studies. He taught, translated and worked to further British-Japanese cultural understanding and international collaboration throughout his life, earning a CBE and Japan's Order of the Sacred Treasure.

Haunting the Hunter

Hanna Harp's incendiary debut paranormal dark romance, perfect for fans of Sadie Kincaid's Forged in Blood and Keri Lake's Anathema, follows Cade, a devoted hunter fighting to shield his sister Callisto from a haunting generational curse, but when a mysterious spirit begins to break down his defenses, both his passion and his will ignite into a scorching, fourth-wall breaking read that places you at the heart of the story.Warning: This is not just a book. It's an invitation. A contract sealed the moment you turn the page. If you choose to read, you choose to be seen. If you choose to follow him, he will hunt you. This story does not end when you close the book... Cade Halloway is a hunter, raised by the Order of the Covenant—a cult built on blood, sacrifice, and power. He tracks and eliminates the powerful and corrupt. A predator disguised as a savior, but he's not here to save the innocent. He's here to rip apart the monsters who hide in plain sight. For years, he has been their weapon. Until he discovered the truth...his sister Callisto is slated to be their next offering. Callisto Halloway was supposed to die for the Order, but her brother has other plans. While in hiding, unable to help or fight, she spends her time trying to control the power she was born with, the power that the Order will kill for. But independence comes at a price, and her uncontrolled power summons a demon far more dangerous than the Order. One that wants more than her body or her soul. Now, on the run from the Order, Cade's only purpose is to save his sister. But Callisto's power has consequences. There's now an unseen force—a spectral presence—following Cade he can't explain and can't escape. A presence that breaks down all of his defenses, and tears down walls even he didn't know he had built, as he finds himself drawn to it in mind, spirit, and body. And it may be the only thing that can save him and Callisto. You. Are you sure you want to be haunted?

Error in calculo

Konec světa v Sudetech není o nic méně násilný, zmrzlý a hladový jako jinde, nicméně má lépe padnoucí kulisy i solidní tradici v krveprolitích.

Strhující epos o galaktické válce a jeden z nejvýznamnějších příspěvků do žánru space opery.
