Zmizlo šesťročné dievčatko s autizmom a sluchovou poruchou. Autor do formy mystického trileru vložil úvahy o vine, pokání a tabu.

The Last Man and The Journal of Sorrow

''I will leave a monument of the existence of Verney, the Last Man.'' Mary Shelley began writing her ''Journal of Sorrow'' (c. 1822-26) three months after the devastating loss of her husband the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley to drowning. In the privacy of the diary''s pages, she grapples with her overwhelming grief over the tragic losses of her young husband, three of their children, and their friend the poet Lord Byron. Shelley ultimately resisted a suicidal depression by throwing herself into writing the allegorical plague novel and roman a clef, The Last Man (1826). Rooted in her own experiences of plagues both real and metaphorical, Shelley set The Last Man in the aftermath of a pestilential, centuries-long war between Greece and Turkey in the late twenty-first century. The novel is an existential and political thought experiment which provokes the mortal reader to contemplate the meaning of life and death in the face of the human-made disasters of war, epidemic, and species extinction. Through the ever-hopeful voice of the narrator Lionel Verney, the eponymous last man, Shelley leads readers to consider: what should be done after a massive global disaster? This edition presents these two masterpieces together, with a new editorial introduction and notes for both texts, giving readers profound insight into Mary Shelley''s enduring relevance for existential philosophy, life writing, post-apocalyptic literature, and political thought.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford''s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Thou Savage Woman

A Daily Telegraph and BBC History Magazine Book of the Year 'Popular history at its best' Spectator 'Boisterous… replete with stabbings, bashing and thumping' Daily Mail 'A cocktail of brutal, tragic, and fascinating true crime from the era of the Tudors and Stuarts. This dark history at its best, narrated with empathy and precision' Gareth Russell LADY KILLERS AND FEMME FATALES – STORIES OF MURDER MOST FOUL – HAVE GRIPPED PUBLIC IMAGINATION FOR CENTURIES Early Modern Britain was awash with pamphlets, ballads, woodcuts broadcasting bloodthirsty tales of traitorous wives, greedy mistresses, cunning female poisoning lacing the supper with deadly substances; of child killers and spiteful witches, stories of women wholly and unnaturally wicked. These were printed or sung, tacked the walls of alehouses, sold in the streets for pennies and read voraciously to thrill all. But why? When the vast majority of murders then (and now) are committed by men. In this bold, page-turning new history, former police officer and historian Blessin Adams tells stories of women whose violent crimes shattered the narrow confines of their gender – and whose notoriety revealed a society that was at once repulsed by and attracted to murderous female rebellion. Based on detailed research in court archives, each chapter explores murders that thrilled and terrified the British public; the crimes that caused the most concern and provoked the most debate. Women in this period killed rarely, and when they did it was usually within the context of extreme provocation or domestic violence. Adams has the ability of the best crime novelists in recreating the setting in which each case occurred as well as the motivations of each perpetrator. Thou Savage Woman reminds us that women in the past had voices, that they sought to control their bodies and their environments and that they also had the capacity for committing acts of unspeakable violence.

Too Soon

“Fiercely funny, sexy, and culturally resonant.” —People, Best Books of the Month • “Shamieh balances her characters’ painful family history and their boisterously funny voices.” —The New Yorker A “wonderfully brash and sparkling” (Oprah Daily, Best Books of the Year) novel that explores exile, love, and freedom across three generations of women—“a Palestinian American Sex and the City” (The Atlantic). Arabella gets an unexpected chance at love when she’s thrust into a conflict and history she’s tried to avoid all her life. Zoya is playing matchmaker for her last unmarried granddaughter and stirring up buried memories. Naya is keeping a secret from her children that will change all their lives. Thirty-five-year-old Arabella, a New York theatre director whose dating and career prospects are drying up, is offered an opportunity to direct a risqué cross-dressing interpretation of a Shakespeare classic—that might garner international attention—in the West Bank. Her mother, Naya, and grandmother, Zoya, hatch a plot to match her with Aziz, a Palestinian American doctor volunteering in Gaza. Arabella agrees to meet Aziz, since her growing feelings for Yoav, a celebrated Israeli American theatre designer, seem destined for disaster... With biting hilarity, Too Soon introduces us to a trio of bold and unforgettable voices. This dramatic saga follows one family’s epic journey fleeing war-torn Jaffa in 1948, chasing the American Dream in Detroit and San Francisco in the sixties and seventies, hustling in the New York theatre scene post-9/11, and daring to stage a show in Palestine in 2012. Upon learning one of them is living on borrowed time, the three women fight to live, make art, and love on their own terms. A funny, sexy, and heart-wrenching literary debut, Too Soon illuminates our shared history and asks, how can we set ourselves free?
